Nadezhdin \u2013 one of the few politicians in Russia openly criticising Putin and Moscow\u2019s Ukraine offensive \u2013 had recently been convicted for displaying \u201cextremist symbols\u201d. \u201cMy ability to legally engage in opposition politics in Russia has been exhausted,\u201d he wrote on Telegram on Sunday. \u201cI\u2019m not prepared to put at risk those who support me and took part in the election campaign\u201d.
