There were entertaining stories about how various Sixers found out about the blockbuster trade, illustrating how stunning the move was even to those close to it. And there was excitement for how Brown is expected to enhance a talented roster now with realistic aspirations to contend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Here is what the Sixers are saying about Brown: <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/sixers\/sixers-lebron-james-mike-gansey-jaylen-brown-labaron-philon-jr-20260716.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Inside Sixers: The LeBron James waiting game, Labaron Philon Jr.\u2019s creativity, and more from Las Vegas Summer League<\/a><\/p>\n<p>VJ Edgecombe <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Edgecombe was in his native Bahamas \u2014 and at a spa \u2014 when he accidentally missed multiple calls from Sixers executive vice president of basketball operations Jameer Nelson. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Then, when he saw a text from Nelson asking to call him as soon as possible, Edgecombe got nervous. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI was like, \u2018Man, it\u2019s free agency, why you calling me so much?\u2019\u201d Edgecombe recalled. \u201cI thought I was gone.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The actual news Nelson wanted to share \u2014 that the trade for Brown was about to happen \u2014 still \u201cshocked\u201d Edgecombe, calling it \u201cthe last thing I expected.\u201d Edgecombe also described it as \u201cbittersweet\u201d because of the quick rapport he developed with the outgoing <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/paul-george\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul George<\/a>, but said he is eager to play with Brown while at the \u201cpeak of his career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justin Edwards <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">This trade was kept so under wraps that even Edwards did not catch wind of it while at the Sixers\u2019 facility on the day it popped. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Edwards had just finished a pool conditioning workout and glanced at the television on a sports program dissecting all the league-wide offseason moves. And did a double-take. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThey were talking about Jaylen Brown and PG, but I didn\u2019t pay attention to it,\u201d Edwards said. \u201cI [saw] it, but I looked away. Then I looked again. I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, snap!\u2019 So I called \u2019Rese [<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/tyrese-maxey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyrese Maxey<\/a>] and he was like, \u2018Yeah, man, I knew since this morning.\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018That\u2019s crazy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Labaron Philon Jr. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The rookie guard said he was not overly shocked when he heard about the trade because he prides himself on keeping his emotions in check. But he knows Brown is going to be a valuable resource during his first NBA season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/sixers\/mike-gansey-lebron-james-ohio-high-school-basketball-sixers-free-agency-20260718.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Before Mike Gansey became a Sixers executive, he was a hard-nosed high school player that earned LeBron James\u2019 respect<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cHe has that championship DNA,\u201d Philon said. \u201cI feel like, as a young guy, that\u2019s somebody you want to look up to [and] somebody you want to learn from. Somebody that\u2019s already been in that moment, he can help all the other guys too that haven\u2019t reached that level yet [and] help us get over that hump. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWith him coming in, I feel like it\u2019s going to be special. We\u2019re going to go at it at practice. He\u2019s going to push me. I\u2019m going to try to push him to the next level.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mike Gansey <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Sixers\u2019 new president of basketball operations landed Brown by following advice he learned while working his way up the Cleveland Cavaliers\u2019 front office: Make the call. Gansey then aimed to assuage Brown\u2019s initial shock about being traded to the rival Sixers with this simple message: \u201cI want you on my team.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI\u2019ve watched him against Cleveland, and he\u2019s always killed us,\u201d Gansey said. \u201c \u2026 We\u2019re just super lucky to get him, and I know he\u2019s motivated. He\u2019s going to be great for everyone because the young guys want that. He\u2019s been a champion and Finals MVP. I think Joel [Embiid is] in a great space and he\u2019s excited, as well. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cObviously, we\u2019ve got to see what it looks like. You can\u2019t win a trade in July. \u2026 Until we actually have a practice or a game, you just don\u2019t know. You hope it\u2019s going to work out, but it\u2019ll take some time, I\u2019m sure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI would have never envisioned this, when I\u2019m sitting there [for my introductory news conference in early June]. \u2026 Just opportunities arise. And that\u2019s why, this business, you can plan all you want and prepare, but you just don\u2019t know. Things happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dalen Terry<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Terry was taking a nap \u2014 with his cell phone and his baby daughter resting on his chest \u2014 when the calls and messages about the trade started pouring in. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Am I still on the team?!\u2019\u201d Terry said once he checked his phone. \u201c \u2026 I\u2019m like, \u2018OK, who was it for?\u2019 They said PG [and] I\u2019m like, \u2018Dang \u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI was just thinking about PG the whole time. It\u2019s amazing that he\u2019s going to be a Sixer.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>T.J. DiLeo <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">When asked about Brown sitting courtside for Saturday\u2019s Summer League game, DiLeo had a confession. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cCan I tell you the truth?\u201d the summer Sixers\u2019 coach said. \u201cI didn\u2019t even see him. I try not to look over there that much, but that is amazing to have him here. \u2026 The guys seeing him, obviously, that\u2019s great. That\u2019s what we\u2019re looking for with our team, just the support of one another, the support of the organization. So that\u2019s really cool that he [was] here, man. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI wish [I\u2019d seen] him now.
