\u201cI heard from (Devils CEO) Brendon Gale yesterday afternoon with a missed call and then a text because obviously things were moving pretty quickly,\u201d Buckley said on Kayo Sports\u2019 On The Couch.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo I went home, kicked the dog, threw the toys out of the cot, and then woke up this morning and went to my job at Geelong. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo, I think it\u2019s taken me a little bit of time to reflect because I was really keen on it, I was in on it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe passion that you\u2019ve heard from Kenny that you sort of have to decide if you\u2019re going to go for a job, you\u2019ve got to decide that you\u2019re absolutely all in on it, and I was, and I absolutely respect the process that the Devils have run.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cI respect their decision with Ken as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s about an organisation learning to understand what its needs are through conversations with different people, and I\u2019m glad they found their man.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re really clear on that, Kenny\u2019s the guy for them, and it leaves me in a in a really exciting role at Geelong, which I\u2019ve been at. And the future there for me will inform my next step in footy. <\/p>\n
\u201cI probably wouldn\u2019t have come back in (as an AFL head coach) unless I looked at Tassie, so it\u2019s a fork in the road, but I\u2019m I\u2019m really grateful for where I\u2019m at, rather than maybe just being on the couch, five years in media without really knowing what I was doing with footy.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut now I\u2019m back in a club, and I don\u2019t know what\u2019s next.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked if he had been told why he the Devils went with Hinkley instead of him, Buckley said: \u201cNo, not yet. I texted Benny (Gale) back that I was disappointed but thanks for letting me know, and I\u2019ll come back around and touch base in time because obviously busy time for the for the Devils.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut look, obviously Kenny\u2019s the right fit for Tassie and good luck to them all and I hope that it goes really well. I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll be a great fit.\u201d<\/p>\n
Attention now turns to the Essendon and Carlton coaching jobs, where it appears increasingly unlikely both clubs will appoint interim coaches Dean Solomon and Josh Fraser for the long-term.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, it\u2019s a bit early, It\u2019s only 24 hours since discovering (that I missed out),\u201d Buckley said when asked if he was interested in the roles.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo look, I was really deliberate in getting back into Geelong, and it was as much to give myself the very best chance to be ready to go for the Tasmanian role,<\/p>\n
\u201cNow that\u2019s off the table, so I\u2019ll be absolutely committed to what\u2019s going on at Geelong.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got an option for an extra year there, and that\u2019s probably the most likely outcome.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd if that\u2019s if that\u2019s the worst thing that\u2019s come about through this process, well I\u2019m honoured and grateful for that opportunity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no guarantees in this.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve got to put yourself out there and you\u2019ve got to have a crack, so there\u2019s disappointment. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut at the same time once that once that dissipates, and it\u2019ll dissipate pretty quickly as we\u2019ve got a big game against Melbourne on Friday, and we\u2019ve got a training session tomorrow so I\u2019m looking forward to that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m grateful to be at Geelong. I\u2019m looking forward to that role,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe events of the last 12 months have led me to where I am, and I\u2019m pretty happy to be at a great club, learning consistently about footy, about people, about coaching, about how you get you know the modern game\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, this position that I\u2019m in is really interesting, isn\u2019t it?\u201d Buckley said, <\/p>\n
\u201cLike, you\u2019re in the media, I\u2019ve given blow by blows and been transparent and that\u2019s been to my detriment in some regards<\/p>\n
\u201cBut no, I haven\u2019t really reflected on where those roles sit, and I don\u2019t think I would enter those processes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m absolutely focused on the next six to 10 weeks with Geelong and how that plays out, and I\u2019ll take some time to reassess what\u2019s after that.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut yeah, I was committed to that, so that ended a day ago, and I\u2019ll take some time to work out what\u2019s next.\u201d<\/p>\n
