The Chicago Cubs<\/a> are set to begin a a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers<\/a> at Wrigley Field on Monday night.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the series opener against the Tigers, the Cubs announced a flurry of roster moves, including cutting 13-year MLB<\/a> veteran Drew Pomeranz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Cubs designated Pomeranz for assignment, according to ESPN\u2019s Jesse Rogers. Additionally, Chicago placed right-hander Phil Maton<\/a> on the injured list due to a recurring right knee ailment. Right-handers Aaron Civale<\/a> and Jameson Taillon<\/a> replaced them on the 26-man roster.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles Angels<\/a> released Pomeranz, 37, on June 18 after he posted a 5.01 ERA with a 1.59 WHIP and 16 strikeouts over 23 1\/3 innings for the club this season.<\/p>\n

The Cubs signed Pomeranz to a minor-league deal on June 22. Chicago recalled the veteran southpaw on July 3.<\/p>\n

In 5 2\/3 innings across six appearances with Chicago this season, Pomeranz recorded a 7.94 ERA with a 1.94 WHIP and one strikeout.<\/p>\n

Pomeranz began his MLB career with the Colorado Rockies<\/a> in 2011. Since then, he has recorded innings for the Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres<\/a>, Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants<\/a>, Angels and Cubs. The left-hander has a career 3.87 ERA with 957 strikeouts over 937 big-league innings.<\/p>\n

Maton has now been on the IL three times this season due to his knee issue. He has struggled in his first season with the Cubs, posting a 6.18 ERA with a 1.81 WHIP and 31 strikeouts in 27 2\/3 innings.<\/p>\n

The Cubs acquired Civale from the Athletics for right-hander Aiden Moffett<\/a> on July 18.<\/p>\n

Civale, who signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Athletics this past offseason, has recorded a 5.42 ERA with a 1.62 WHIP and 58 strikeouts over 74 2\/3 innings this year.<\/p>\n

Chicago Cubs Right Now<\/p>\n

The Cubs are coming off a 2-1 series victory over the Minnesota Twins<\/a> at Wrigley Field this past weekend. Game 1 of their series against the Tigers is slated to begin at 7:05 p.m. CDT on Monday.<\/p>\n

Chicago holds the first NL Wild Card spot with a 56-43 record. The club is six games back of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central.<\/p>\n
