ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Kate Ceberano \u201cnearly threw up\u201d after coming across a deepfake post showing her mourning the death of late actor Sam Neill<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The artificial intelligence creation depicted a tearful Ceberano holding up a phone with a photo of herself embracing the Jurassic Park star.<\/p>\n

It carried the caption \u201cKate Ceberano mourned her dear friend Sam Neill by sharing their final photo together from his last public appearance\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Australian singer was furious her likeness had been used in this way, saying \u201cWhat the actual…!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy first interaction with an AI version of myself. I nearly threw up,\u201d she shared on Facebook, Instagram and X.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel sorry to the good people who wrote meaningful comments to this specious post.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were tricked and I kinda think this is just the beginning. I\u2019m speechless!\u201d<\/p>\n

The performer was flooded with hundreds of comments, many offering messages of support and others calling out the unsettling nature of the \u201cgrim new reality upon us\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople need to question everything because reality as we know it is being manipulated big time,\u201d said one.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry you were targeted Kate. I\u2019m sure it feels quite violating and humiliating to experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

The AI creation depicting Ceberano was shared by Golden Era Hollywood, a Facebook page with more about 330,000 followers and countless other posts involving celebrities.<\/p>\n

\u201cKate Ceberano\u2019s final photograph with Sam Neill has become a deeply emotional memory,\u201d it said in its upload involving the Australian.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two looked happy as they enjoyed the evening together, never knowing it would be their last public moment. <\/p>\n

\u201cAfter his passing, she remembered the laughter and warmth they shared, honouring not only the celebrated actor the world admired, but the kind and genuine friend she was fortunate to know.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the hundreds of people that replied to the deepfake post said: \u201cI\u2019m so sorry for the loss of your dear friend, I think we\u2019re all grieving.\u201d<\/p>\n

7NEWS.com.au has sought comment from the people running the Facebook page, but are yet to hear back.<\/p>\n

Neill and Ceberano were friends and did pose together at the ARIA Hall of Fame Awards in June.<\/p>\n

The event was one of Neill\u2019s final appearances in public.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat night in Sydney. Four women I have idolised for decades were honoured. Jenny Morris, Kate Ceberano, and Vika and Linda Bull,\u201d Neill shared on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\u201cJenny was inducted into the Hall by no less than our former NZ PM, Jacinda Ardern. Another hero.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ceberano shared a sweet snap of the pair from the evening in a tribute following his death.<\/p>\n

It was the same snap used in the AI post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI sang with you in Molokai whilst you played your ukulele. Your gentle heart and radiant smile made me feel seen and loved,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will always be one of the special souls it has been such a pleasure to know you . <\/p>\n

\u201cAloha \u2018Oe til we meet again dear Sam.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ceberano\u2019s frustration comes after an Australian-led team revealed they had successfully trained people to identify AI generated faces.<\/a><\/p>\n

Major advances in artificial intelligence has powered hyper-realistic deepfake<\/a> images, video and audio, making it challenging to distinguish what is authentic and what is artificial, and presenting major hazards.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeepfake fraud is a real and growing problem,\u201d UNSW Sydney IDeA Lab director Dr James Dunn told 7NEWS.com.au.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI-generated faces can make fake profiles, romance scams and misinformation campaigns appear more credible, and Interpol<\/a> reports that synthetic images are already being used in social-engineering schemes worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

About one in four Australians say they have come across a deepfake scam in the past years, according to a study from the Commonwealth Bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n
