In the most recent episode of Warming Up<\/a> with GOLF\u2019s Dylan Dethier, Young explained that the most common advice he gives to amateurs is also the simplest: build a solid setup.<\/p>\n \u201cEverybody can set up properly,\u201d he says, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing keeping anybody from setting up with pretty square feet, shoulders, hips. But people screw that up a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n Why the setup never stops being important<\/p>\n While he explains that one of the biggest challenges for amateurs is a lack of time spent refining key fundamentals, there\u2019s another surprising factor at play \u2014 one that even he still struggles with from time to time.<\/p>\n \u201cMost people\u2019s concept of reality is pretty off. Like even mine, I still fight,\u201d Young says.\u00a0<\/p>\n One way Young combats this is by making exaggerated rehearsal swings to feel square because what feels correct often isn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI fight like right over and left foot forward \u2014 like closed hips,\u201d he says, \u201cSo, I\u2019m always \u2014 like I mean I was out there at the range yesterday taking practice swings like this, taking little [swings] to try to just make the natural position more square.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s a reminder that \u201cfeel\u201d and \u201creal\u201d rarely match and that the answer isn\u2019t usually found\u00a0searching for another swing tip \u2014 but rather by spending time confirming you\u2019re aligned and square.<\/p>\n The next time you\u2019re tempted to chase a fast fix, start with your setup instead. It might not be flashy, but as Young explains, mastering the basics is often the shortest path to better golf.<\/p>\n
