Red Bull reportedly rejected a $3 billion bid, led by a former advisor to Bernie Ecclestone, for their sister Racing Bulls<\/a> team. In the latest episode of GPblog’s F1 Paddock Update, Ben Hunt and Jim Kimberley discussed whether Red Bull should have accepted the offer. <\/p>\n

The bid, which was reported by The Times, was said to be led by former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone’s investigator, Dean Attew and financier Andrew Harriott. They are claimed to have approached Red Bull with an offer backed by Abu Dhabi-based funds.<\/p>\n

Ben Hunt, GPblog’s lead columnist, said that if he was in charge of Red Bull, he would have accepted the $3 billion offer, arguing that at a time when Red Bull are struggling with uncertainty over Max Verstappen’s future, there isn’t a need for Red Bull to have two teams in Formula 1.<\/p>\n

“You know you’ve got one team that’s really struggling to turn things around at the moment. Has a big problem trying to convince a multiple world champion to stay and there’s a huge exodus of staff. It’s a very big problem Red Bull have for their main team. The second team has always been convenient in terms of allowing for extra seats and driver development.<\/p>\n

“The Red Bull Junior Programme probably isn’t as important as it once was, in terms of nurturing talent. I don’t think there’s a massive need to have two teams in Formula 1 running alternate liveries and especially under different brands in terms of Racing Bulls. Yes, there’s still Red Bull advertising on it but it is a very different entity. They are run as two separate businesses. I think that if it made sense financially, just have one team to focus on.”<\/p>\n

‘Red Bull have a competitive advantage’Last month, McLaren team principal Zak Brown, again reiterated his stance against Red Bull owning more than one team<\/a> on the grid. In an open letter ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, he said it was time to “move to a state of true independence between teams”.<\/p>\n

GPblog columnist Hunt agrees with Brown’s stance, saying: “I don’t think it is necessarily fair to have two teams owned by the same umbrella group.<\/p>\n

“You have knowledge of what’s going on in terms of market rate and value.
