{"id":815829,"date":"2026-07-22T04:52:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T04:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/815829\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T04:52:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T04:52:13","slug":"former-socceroos-captain-paul-wade-reveals-probable-cte-brain-disease-diagnosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/815829\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Socceroos captain Paul Wade reveals probable CTE brain disease diagnosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Former Socceroos captain Paul Wade has announced he has been diagnosed with &#8220;probable&#8221; chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which has been linked to repeated head knocks and injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement put out by Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) on Wednesday, Wade said he was diagnosed in late 2024 with a suspected case of the disease after experiencing neurological symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said this was upgraded after further assessments to probable in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The disease can only be confirmed after death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They did the tests \u2026 and [neurologists] went, &#8216;Oh, we&#8217;ve got a real problem here,&#8221; he told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After scans showed it was probable CTE, he said he just &#8220;stood there&#8221; and thought &#8220;am I going to die from this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Paul Wade coaching kids' soccer\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/e5439e818fb1cc8b92be97242acd57f5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Wade revealed a diagnosis of probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy. (7.30)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Wade, who now lives north of Sydney, said receiving the diagnosis was &#8220;difficult&#8221;, but wanted to share his experience to raise awareness of concussion and brain health across all levels of football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Football gave me so much. It gave me a life, a career, incredible experiences and the privilege of representing Australia,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I also must be honest about the challenges I now face and the uncertainty that comes with living with a neurodegenerative condition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Asked whether the probable diagnosis was linked to his time playing, he said &#8220;it must have had something to do with it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think about the number of times at a training session I headed a ball.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Symptoms of the disease can include depression, memory loss, tremors, poor impulse control and suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Advancement of the game&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 64-year-old, who led the national team for six years in the 90s, said more understanding was needed about the long-term effects of repeated head impacts to &#8220;protect future generations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If sharing my experience can help someone seek support, create better education and prevention, or help the game take brain health more seriously, then it is worth doing,&#8221; Wade, who also lives with epilepsy, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Wade&#8217;s announcement comes less than a month after Four Corner&#8217;s revealed <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-29\/afl-australian-rules-players-diagnosed-cte-brain-disease\/106847638\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106847638\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">33 Australian Rules players had been diagnosed<\/a> with CTE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said people concerned should not &#8220;stop playing&#8221; contact sports &#8220;because if you do we&#8217;re going to have an even bigger problem with mental health and wellbeing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;To the people actually making the rules we&#8217;ve got to come up with ways we can make it safer,&#8221; Wade said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Diego Maradona\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/05f0d41175cd9040e479433054312d50.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Wade (left) leading out the Socceroos for the 1993 Australia v Argentina FIFA World Cup play-off match. (Getty Images: Joe Mann\/Offside)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If I could say to Football Australia, or even FIFA, if you&#8217;re listening, let&#8217;s put some protocols in there because you&#8217;ve got everything about concussion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[But] you don&#8217;t talk about CTE and how we can change the game and change the training and change the age so that it&#8217;s minimalised, so we&#8217;re not exposing kids to CTE.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He asked who was going to &#8220;stand up and be brave and say no&#8221;, and assert boundaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Someone&#8217;s got to say no. Kids are \u2026 heading a ball 12 years or under, make it 14 I don&#8217;t care,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">PFA chief executive Beau Busch said Wade&#8217;s decision to open up about his diagnosis was an &#8220;important act of leadership&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In sharing his story, Paul has once again illustrated his truly remarkable commitment to the advancement of the game,&#8221;  Mr Busch said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He is doing so not only for himself, but for the players and families who are facing, or may one day face, similar questions about brain health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Busch said Australian football must be proactive in tackling brain injuries &#8220;through better policies, research, education and support for former players&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A decorated career<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Wade, who was born in England in 1962, came to Australia at 11 years old with a passion for football, moving his way up to senior positions within Victorian clubs including Croydon, Green Gully, Brunswick and South Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 1985, he claimed a spot in the Australian team, playing his first full international against Czechoslovakia the following year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He then captained the Australian soccer side from 1990 to 1996.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Former Socceroos captain Paul Wade\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/088596e6e4c47807ee8a451199c2edfd.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Wade was captain of the Socceroos for six years.
