href="https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/database/drivers/andrea-kimi-antonelli/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Kimi Antonelli left Belgium 45 points clear of Lewis Hamilton after a sixth win of the season, the young Italian regaining the spotlight after a series of unfortunate races.

The nature of the Hungarian layout suggests Ferrari should be a bigger threat to Mercedes, and the added twist of possible rain on Sunday will increase the tension before teams go away for a few weeks.

Round 11 at the Hungaroring is unlikely to change the pecking order much, but it will decide the mood teams carry into six weeks without racing, and for one team in particular, Hungary matters more than the championship table suggests.

Aston Martin arrives having managed a single point all season, sitting 10th in the constructors’ standings ahead of only debutant Cadillac.

The team is finally introducing a substantial upgrade built around Adrian Newey‘s promise of a step forward.

Whether that step is real, and whether it’s enough to justify writing off the first half of 2026 to get there, is the biggest open question of the weekend.

What to watch out for: Aston Martin‘s big gamble

For the first time all season, Aston Martin turns up to a grand prix with something other than the car it started the year with.

After 10 races spent running essentially the same aerodynamic package that debuted in Bahrain testing, and with Fernando Alonso still stuck on a single point, Adrian Newey has staked the team’s summer break on a single throw of the dice: rather than trickle updates through the year as is now standard practice in Formula 1, Aston has held everything back for one substantial package arriving in Budapest.

            <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" height="1010" width="1796" alt="Fernando Alonso leads Aston Martin-Honda teammate Lance Stroll during the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix" class="" src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" http:="" data-lazy- data-lazy- recent races

                        Grand Prix Photo

The scale of Aston’s problem makes the gamble easier to understand.

The team sits 10th in the constructors’ championship, ahead only of newcomer Cadillac, a startling position for an organisation backed by Lawrence Stroll‘s investment, a brand-new £200 million campus, and the highest-profile technical hire in the paddock.

Newey has been candid about why: parts arriving late not through lack of effort but because inherited project-management systems and physics tools – some tracing back decades – were never fit for a car built to a wholesale regulation reset.

Fixing that, more than any single part on the car, has been the actual job this year.

It is not a clean-sheet car that arrives in Hungary – the chassis and gearbox architecture stay, and the front suspension is untouched – but it’s close to one in scale.

Both chassis and gearbox have been stripped of weight seriously enough to require re-homologation and fresh crash tests, alongside a new nose, reworked aerodynamic surfaces and revised rear suspension.

The aim, tellingly, is simply to get the car near the weight limit, a quiet admission that much of the AMR26’s early-season deficit has been mass rather than raw aerodynamic shortfall.

The number doing the rounds in the paddock is 2.5 seconds – Aston’s own best-case estimate for what the Hungary package, minus the Honda engine step still to come at Zandvoort after the summer break, might be worth.

Even that would not have been enough to escape Q1 at Silverstone, a reminder of just how far back Aston has fallen.

Chief trackside officer Mike Krack has tried to manage expectations accordingly, saying only that Aston needs to “put the car on the ground” and see where it lands, while Lance Stroll has been blunter about the current AMR26, admitting things have been “pretty terrible.”

Will Aston’s form influence Alonso’s future decision?

                        Grand Prix Photo

He has also drawn a clear line for what comes next: if the chassis is still off the pace once the upgrade lands, an improved Honda engine at Zandvoort won’t be enough on its own to fix things.

There is more riding on Hungary than one weekend’s laptime, too.

Newey has framed the update as the first tangible sign of the deeper rebuild he has been overseeing – new simulation tools, more components brought in-house, an organisation he wants “operating as one cohesive unit” for the first time.

And with Alonso’s own future in the sport still an open question, a genuine step forward matters for reasons well beyond the championship table.

So the real question in Hungary isn’t whether Aston Martin will suddenly be competitive – it won’t be – but whether the step is real enough, and repeatable enough, to justify half a season effectively written off in pursuit of it.

Who’s under pressure: Honda

Any conversation about Aston Martin’s Hungary gamble centres on the chassis – the weight stripped out, the re-homologated gearbox, the aerodynamic overhaul Newey has staked the summer break on.

What’s easy to miss is that Honda’s own contribution to the package this weekend is close to zero.

The engine step everyone actually wants to see doesn’t arrive until Zandvoort, after the break. Hungary is Honda watching someone else’s upgrade land, and having very little to do with the result either way.

That’s an odd position for a manufacturer that was formally identified as the weakest power unit on the 2026 grid – weak enough to be granted the biggest ADUO relief.

Honda’s Shintaro Orihara at Spa

                        Honda

Honda’s Hungary is, in effect, a free pass: whatever happens to Aston’s laptime this weekend, nobody can reasonably pin it on the engine. But a free pass only lasts as long as the excuse holds, and Hungaroring may not be generous with excuses either way.

Shintaro Orihara, Honda’s trackside general manager and chief engineer, has already tried to frame the weekend on favourable terms, pointing out that Hungary’s low-speed, low-power-sensitivity layout should mask some of the unit’s shortcomings even without the revised engine on hand.

He also flagged Sunday’s likely heat as a cooling concern to monitor from FP1, a reminder that even a circuit forgiving of raw power still carries its own risk for a unit that has struggled with driveability and deployment all year.

That’s the tension worth paying attention to. If the chassis genuinely finds the two-plus seconds Aston is hoping for and the car is still nowhere near the points, the focus may shift a lot more towards Honda, which will be in a less comfortable spot heading into its own Zandvoort deadline.

A season this terrible reflects on both parties, but the gamble on an almost completely new chassis has absorbed a lot of the public blame so far. Hungary is last race where Honda gets a free pass, but it’s also where the pressure will start to build up.

Historical highlight: The circuit that opened the Iron Curtain

Formula 1 in Hungary was never supposed to happen in Hungary.

Bernie Ecclestone‘s original target, in the early 1980s, was Moscow, a Soviet Grand Prix that would have been the sport’s first behind the Iron Curtain.

That plan went nowhere, however, after Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev died and the new Soviet authorities showed little appetite for hosting a capitalist circus.

The first Hungarian GP brought F1 beyond the Iron Curtain

                        Grand Prix Photo

It was a Budapest-born advertising man working on the Brazilian Grand Prix, Tamás Rohonyi, who suggested his home country instead, introducing Ecclestone to Tibor Balogh, head of the Hungarian Automobile Club, who in turn brought in transport minister Lajos Urbán.

The first plan wasn’t the circuit that exists today at all.
