One of Perth\u2019s most ambitious art projects has been recognised on the world stage, with the Linewide Graphic Trail nominated for a prestigious International CODAaward.<\/p>\n

The artwork, created by Moving Colours Studio, is part of 100 shortlisted projects from around the globe competing in the 2026 awards, which recognise outstanding commissioned art in interior, architectural and public spaces.<\/p>\n

The nomination also places the project in contention for the People\u2019s Choice CODAaward, with public voting open now until July 30.<\/p>\n

The artwork stretches over 7km underneath the newly elevated Armadale trail line, the Linewide Graphic Trail is the largest public artwork in the Southern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n

The installation extends across six suburbs, transforming the rail infrastructure as one continuous piece of art complete with two basketball courts, two skate parks, eight abutments, seven sculptural elements and 120 concrete piers.<\/p>\n

The six suburbs include Carlisle, Oats Street (East Victoria Park), Welshpool, Queens Park, Cannington and Beckenham.<\/p>\n

The project was conceived as a continuous line of colour moving throughout landscape.<\/p>\n

The cool teal and green tones near the city gradually give way to warmer reds and yellows as it approaches the Perth Hills. Each suburb has its own distinct colour \u201cidentity\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the project team, the artwork was designed to transform what could have become an overlooked \u201cneglected\u201d space beneath the elevated train infrastructure into a vibrant public destination.<\/p>\n

Planning for the project took a year, which included community consultation and collaboration between Moving Colour Studio, Hassell Studio, public art consultant Artify, METRONET and the Public Transport Authority.<\/p>\n

Installation of the project took four months and used around 2000 litres of paint, powder-coated aluminium sculptures and painted treatments for the sporting facilities.<\/p>\n

Toni Sikes, chief executive of CODAworx, said the enormity of the project is \u201cso impressive\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe artists\u2019 goal of \u2018moving colour through space\u2019 is accomplished in a sophisticated and striking manner, to the benefit of all train travellers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Ms Sikes said the CODAawards are based on three criteria \u2014 the integration of the artwork into the space, the strength of the collaborative process, and the ability of a project to blend the art seamlessly to create \u201ca place as art\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe People\u2019s Choice award democratises the recognition of outstanding work, giving the public direct say alongside the expertise of the jury.<\/p>\n

Ms Sikes said that public art is making its way into the spaces and places where we, the public, live and work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese projects are growing in scope and scale, and attracting the top talent in the art world. Public art is exploding!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
