Snow has fallen across Tasmania\u2019s highlands overnight, closing roads and prompting warnings from police and forecasters.<\/p>\n

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a road weather alert early on Thursday, warning of dangerous conditions in parts of the Western and Central Plateau forecast districts.<\/p>\n

\u201cSnow covered roads above 400 metres will make driving conditions dangerous during Thursday,\u201d the alert said.<\/p>\n

Tasmania Police say Lake Dobson Road at Mount Field is closed to all vehicles because of snow.<\/p>\n

Four other routes are open only to 4WD vehicles.<\/p>\n

They are the Lyell Highway between Ouse and Derwent Bridge, Highland Lakes Road from Shannon Tier to Miena, Marlborough Secondary Road and Lake St Clair Road.<\/p>\n

Police say drivers should also take extreme caution on the Gordon River Road at Tim Shea.<\/p>\n

Pinnacle Road on kunanyi\/Mt Wellington has been closed at the park entrance at Bracken Lane.<\/p>\n

The Hobart City Council expects snow and ice to limit access to the mountain into the weekend.<\/p>\n

Temperatures fell below freezing across the highlands overnight.<\/p>\n

Liawenee dropped to minus 2.9 degrees, while kunanyi\/Mt Wellington was minus four at 8am.<\/p>\n

Drivers reported snow on the ground at lower levels overnight, including on the Learys Corner to Moina route on the approach to Cradle Mountain.<\/p>\n

Visitors at Cradle woke to cars covered in snow.<\/p>\n

The bureau forecasts showers falling as snow above 400 metres in the west and south on Thursday, lowering to 300 metres in the far south.<\/p>\n

Forecasters have also issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds in the state\u2019s far south from Thursday afternoon, with gusts of about 100km\/h possible.<\/p>\n

Police say drivers should always drive to the conditions, as they can change without warning.<\/p>\n
