Tennis<\/a> bosses were counting on the star power of top-ranked singles stars to boost the US Open’s reimagined mixed doubles<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And while the inclusion of the sport’s best singles players brought more eyeballs to a section of the tournament that might’ve been neglected otherwise, the move did not translate into results..<\/p>\n

Defending mixed doubles champions Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani proved playing doubles is an acquired skill, advancing to the semi-finals after defeating 2022 Wimbledon singles winner Elena Rybakina and 2024 US Open singles finalist Taylor Fritz in straight sets, and then Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev 4-1, 5-4 (4) in the quarter-finals. Sets are first to four games with a two-game buffer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some career doubles players were left fuming by this year’s format shake-up that saw eight pairings based on the combined singles rankings and eight wild cards compete.<\/p>\n

Vavassori and Errani were part of the wild cards, with the former expressing solidarity with those left out.<\/p>\n

“Tactics in doubles are very important,” Vavasorri said. “There are many very strong players here, but we often play together, we also talk off the court, and this is important.<\/p>\n

“We also play for all the doubles players who cannot compete at the mixed doubles tournament here. We try to do our best.”<\/p>\n

While doubles players weren’t happy with the decision, crowds at Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong were strong.<\/p>\n

And they were privy to some winning tennis from the big names as Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud beat American duo Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe 4-1, 4-2 in their opener.<\/p>\n

They then made easy work of grand slam doubles finalist Caty McNally and partner Lorenzo Musetti winning 4-1, 4-2 to claim another of the semi-final spots.<\/p>\n

“Last two days felt like one long day but I’m super happy to be here and playing with Casper,” said Swiatek. “Didn’t have time to play many doubles to practise but I think I can improvise pretty well.”<\/p>\n

In other results, No.1 seeds Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula defeated Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu.<\/p>\n

While Taylor Townsend, the women’s doubles No.1, and Ben Shelton beat fourth seeds Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune 4-2, 5-4 (2).<\/p>\n

Earlier, Jannik Sinner pulled out of the event, a day after he quit in the first set of the Cincinnati Open final because he was feeling ill.<\/p>\n

Sinner was supposed to compete in mixed doubles with Katerina Siniakova.<\/p>\n
