Lawson began the 2025 Formula 1 season alongside Max Verstappen after earning promotion from Racing Bulls, only to be replaced after difficult weekends in Australia and China<\/a>.<\/p>\n The New Zealander crashed out of the Australian Grand Prix before qualifying last for both the sprint and grand prix in Shanghai, prompting Red Bull to return him to its sister team after just two rounds.<\/p>\n Lawson maintained publicly that he was fine when he arrived back at Racing Bulls, but Permane said those who had worked with him previously could see the experience had affected him.<\/p>\n \u201cHe didn\u2019t really say much about it to start with, honestly, his head was down and he won\u2019t thank me for saying this, because I think at the time, he was, \u2018no, everything\u2019s fine\u2019, but you could tell,\u201d Permane told F1\u2019s Beyond The Grid podcast.<\/p>\n \u201cWe obviously knew him from the year before, we could tell he certainly wasn\u2019t the same guy, and I don\u2019t want to say we rebuilt him because that\u2019s a little bit dramatic, but we just supported and helped him where we could.<\/p>\n \u201cHe works incredibly hard and he works incredibly well with his engineering team, and he did it.\u201d<\/p>\n Complete our motor oil survey for your chance to win 1 of 5 Supercheap Auto $100 gift cards. Permane said Racing Bulls provided support throughout Lawson\u2019s return, but credited the 24-year-old with driving his own recovery through his work in the simulator and alongside his engineering group.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re there to help him, but he made a turnaround,\u201d Permane said.<\/p>\n \u201cHe worked hard in the simulator, he worked hard off track and on track, and I think we saw that culminating with some really, really good performances.\u201d<\/p>\n Lawson recently provided his own account of the demotion<\/a>, revealing he had no warning he was about to lose the Red Bull seat despite rumours emerging during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.<\/p>\n \u201cThat, at the time, was like a really hard thing to deal with,\u201d Lawson told the High Performance Podcast.<\/p>\n He also admitted the criticism surrounding his performances made the period more challenging, with questions raised publicly about whether he deserved to remain in Formula 1.<\/p>\n Lawson attempted to focus on retaining a place on the grid rather than losing what he considered his dream opportunity, while Verstappen offered support privately following the decision.<\/p>\n Liam Lawson during his time for Red Bull in 2025. Image: XPB Images<\/p>\n Permane said he encouraged Lawson to remove outside distractions once his place at Racing Bulls for 2026 had been secured and concentrate entirely on his driving.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat I said to him last year was, \u2018forget anything outside of this\u2019, especially after we confirmed him for 2026,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI said, \u2018there\u2019s nothing that should be more important than this, don\u2019t worry about this flight or that flight, or this hotel, or you want to go here\u2019, I said \u2018forget all that and just focus on this\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n That approach has helped Lawson establish himself as Racing Bulls\u2019 senior driver alongside rookie Arvid Lindblad this season.<\/p>\n Lawson has already scored 39 points, surpassing his entire 2025 total, and helped the team record consecutive double points finishes in Monaco, Barcelona, Austria and Great Britain.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can see that with him this year, he\u2019s definitely done that,\u201d Permane said.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s laser-focused, it\u2019s a bit of a clich\u00e9, but he is and I\u2019m really pleased that you can see that in his driving.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s much more aware of the car, I think he works better and closer with his engineers, he knows what he wants from the car, he\u2019s able to drive it in a way to get the best out of the car.\u201d<\/p>\n Permane said he believed Lawson\u2019s adaptability has also played a major role in his progress, comparing his approach with drivers such as Verstappen and Fernando Alonso.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think Fernando [Alonso] has a driving style, I don\u2019t think Max [Verstappen] has a driving style,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI think they just drive the car however it needs to be driven to go quickest.<\/p>\n \u201cI think Liam is doing a little bit of that this year, he\u2019s figuring out how to drive these cars, what\u2019s the best way to get everything out of this car, and he\u2019s doing that.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he\u2019s able to do that because he\u2019s just concentrating on driving and he\u2019s not worrying too much about the outside world.\u201d<\/p>\n Lawson will receive Racing Bulls\u2019 latest upgrades at the Hungaroring after Lindblad ran the new specification on his way to ninth in Belgium.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/survey-oil-728x90-1.gif\")
