Untelevised team radio footage from the Belgian Grand Prix has uncovered the moment Lewis Hamilton<\/a> insisted that he was in \u201can impossible position\u201d in his first-lap collision with Mercedes<\/a> driver George Russell.<\/p>\n

It comes after PlanetF1.com revealed on Wednesday that Hamilton\u2019s controversial five-second penalty will be raised in a meeting between drivers and the FIA ahead of this weekend\u2019s Hungarian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

Hamilton and Russell made contact at Les Combes of the opening lap at Spa, with the Mercedes driver spinning into the gravel in the latest blow to his F1 2026 title hopes.<\/p>\n

Hamilton was handed a five-second penalty for his role in the incident, leaving him in fourth place at the chequered flag.<\/p>\n

Speaking to PlanetF1.com and other media outlets after the race, Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers\u2019 Association, insisted Hamilton did not deserve a penalty.<\/p>\n

Russell said: \u201cThe incident with Lewis, honestly, I think was a racing incident. He didn\u2019t do anything reckless. It was just one of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n

PlanetF1.com revealed this week that Hamilton\u2019s penalty<\/a>, as well as the decision to take no action against Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc following a collision with Oscar Piastri on the Kemmel straight, will be on the agenda in a meeting between drivers and the FIA in Budapest.<\/p>\n

Untelevised footage from Spa has revealed how Hamilton protested his innocence after making contact with Russell.<\/p>\n

The full exchange between Hamilton and his race engineer, Carlo Santi, went as follows:<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cCar crossed over in front of me. I was right behind another car, so I had no front end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cAnd mode race.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cI don\u2019t know if I have damage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cAnd car looks good, Lewis. Car looks\u2026 safety car deployed. Stay out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cSomething flew off\u2026 something flew off the front of my car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cUnderstood. And mode safety car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWe are checking on cameras. So far seems OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cThat was an impossible position.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cYes, we saw.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cAnd target is to keep the tyres where they are now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cAnd you will find a double yellow in 5, 6 and 7 and a recovery car will be on track.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cAnd stay in line with the other cars and stay on the left.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cI don\u2019t know if my wing is in one piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWe think the wing is fine. We are checking the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cSo unlucky with that turn. Corner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ferrari opted against informing Hamilton of his five-second penalty initially. Spa marked the second race in succession that Hamilton was penalised, having also been punished five seconds for a false start at Silverstone.<\/p>\n

Santi broke the news to his driver as Hamilton was questioning the pit wall\u2019s strategy choice on Lap 18.<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cWhen\u2019s the gap clearing up behind? When\u2019s the gap clearing up behind?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cWhat lap are we on?\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWe are Lap 18.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cWhy the hell? I told you what strategy I wanted to do, just to put me out with everyone else now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWe are on Plan B.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cGot some understeer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cVirtual safety car deployed. Stay positive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cWhat\u2019s the situation?\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWe are boxing if the virtual safety car is staying on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cDouble stack?\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cBoth car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cVirtual safety car ending, we stay out. Watch your delta, watch your delta.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWe are opening the gap to Piastri. We need to serve a five-second penalty, that\u2019s why.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cAh, another one\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident with Russell was still playing on Hamilton\u2019s mind at the end of the race as he insisted that the collision was not \u201cmy mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Hamilton also took the blame for a \u201ctough\u201d weekend, which saw him crash on the exit of the Fagnes chicane in the closing stages of Saturday\u2019s FP3 session.<\/p>\n

As reported by PlanetF1.com<\/a>, he had admitted after qualifying that the car \u201cwasn\u2019t the same\u201d following repairs.<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cAnd well done, Lewis. Finish P4. Antonelli won the race, Charles second, Max third. Without the penalty, it would have been an easy podium.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cAnd mode charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cYeah, tough weekend guys. That was me \u2013 on me. I didn\u2019t feel like it was my mistake today. I just\u2026 I\u2019m in the spot I\u2019m supposed to be in. But thanks for continuing to try.\u201d<\/p>\n
