{"id":818498,"date":"2026-07-23T10:10:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T10:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/818498\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T10:10:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T10:10:20","slug":"inside-dick-lees-creative-sanctum-designed-to-house-a-lifetime-of-pop-culture-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/818498\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside Dick Lee\u2019s creative sanctum, designed to house a lifetime of pop culture history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 Tucked away on the top half of his shophouse home in the south-central part of Singapore, Dick Lee\u2019s 300 sq ft attic study serves as his primary creative centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A split-level personal sanctuary, it is where the local musician maintains a disciplined routine, working from 8.30am to 4pm daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">One corner is a dedicated music area with equipment such as a piano, computer, speakers and a stand that holds sheet music. An acoustic guitar sits not too far away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A separate nook functions as a personal art space, taking advantage of the attic\u2019s excellent natural lighting that streams in through windows and the high, exposed pitched roof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The room also houses an intimate archive for his most cherished diaries, magazines, vinyl records, CDs, mementos from countless concerts and theatre performances as well as toys and trinkets he has collected over the decades.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/c8181b1f0d8b99013577a3a19d5b8f2536e9f1368cc07543ce39a6e1965e99f5.webp\" alt=\"eddick - Singapore musician Dick Lee's home attic study. &#10;Copyrights : PHOTO : COURTESY OF DICK LEE\" class=\"aspect-portrait flex items-start shrink-0 portrait article-portrait object-contain mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-secondary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">The attic has a high, exposed, pitched roof that lets in plenty of natural light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-tertiary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\"> PHOTO : COURTESY OF DICK LEE<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Containing a seasoned black leather sofa brought over from his first apartment in Cairnhill in the 1980s, the space also serves as a collaborative hub where he hosts meetings with project partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">One of his current projects is a concert marking his 70th birthday on Aug 24, Chasing Light: Ding Yi x Dick Lee 70, which will take place at Esplanade Concert Hall on July 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The performance sees home-grown Chinese chamber music ensemble Ding Yi Music Company take on Mandarin and Cantopop classics that he wrote and composed for artistes such as Leslie Cheung, Sandy Lam, Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Anita Mui, Leon Lai, Aaron Kwok, Kit Chan and Mavis Hee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Of the sanctum that perfectly encapsulates the ongoing evolution of one of Singapore\u2019s most enduring creatives, Lee says: \u201cI make my music here, I write musicals, and I do all my creative work here, even drawing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1b376ce44159994af739b6d9f10413a45b602ffc334b58062ba317b1fa6bc0c6.webp\" alt=\"Dick Lee in the study room at his house on June 25, 2026.\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-secondary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">The room is where Dick Lee works on projects such as the upcoming Chasing Light: Ding Yi x Dick Lee 70 concert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-tertiary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\"> ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANG<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It is also where recent creative sessions over the restaging of Fried Rice Paradise \u2013 The Makan Party, a musical dining experience to be held at Paradox Singapore Hotel from Aug 18 to Sept 11, took place. Lee is directing and adding new songs to this version of the musical that first ran at the same venue in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The room\u2019s aesthetic has evolved over decades ever since he moved into his two-and-a-half-floor restored Peranakan shophouse in 2001. It was originally a utilitarian area packed with cabinets where \u201cthere was nowhere for people to sit\u201d, and a customised renovation about 10 years ago introduced built-in shelving to help organise his extensive archives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">DESIGN DETAILS<\/p>\n<p>An archive of prized possessions<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/25c3a3de37cc8887a230bfc334faa8bae499ddb91022c56406073432c8fda6de.webp\" alt=\"Some of Dick Lee\u2019s journals, photo albums and drawings seen in the study room at his house on June 25, 2026.\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-secondary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">The room houses journals, photo albums and drawings dating back to the late 1960s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-tertiary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\"> ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANG<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Although Lee donated the vast majority of his extensive career archives to the National Library, he retained a highly personal collection of notebooks and photo albums that occupy the custom shelves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI\u2019m a great archiver&#8230; I archive everything in my life,\u201d he declares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These shelves showcase his earliest artistic ambitions, dating back to 1969 when he was a Secondary 1 student.
