The lead-up and the result of that fight raised questions about Spence&#8217;s fitness and preparation. Going into the Crawford fight, he had compiled an undefeated record (28-0, 22 knockouts) as he dominated the welterweight division. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>He was one of the top fighters, not only from the Dallas-Fort Worth area but in the sport overall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/other-sports\/2023\/07\/29\/terence-crawford-cements-legacy-with-dominant-performance-vs-errol-spence-jr\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">That night in Las Vegas, Crawford destroyed Spence<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The undefeated Crawford, from Omaha, Neb., knocked down Spence three times before the fight was stopped by TKO in the ninth round. All three judges saw the one-sided fight for Crawford at the time of the stoppage, scoring it 79-70. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spence looked as if he were in a daze. He wasn\u2019t a Shark. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/other-sports\/2023\/07\/30\/why-desotos-errol-spence-should-avoid-a-rematch-with-terence-crawford-at-any-weight\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He looked more like a guppie against one of the top fighters in the sport<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After that victory, Crawford moved up in weight, fighting twice before retiring after a dominating victory over Canelo Alvarez in September 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The loss sent him\u00a0into self-reflection. He called it retirement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor sure, that\u2019s why I don\u2019t take nothing back,\u201d Spence said in late June after a day of training. \u201cEverything I went through, basically, I had to look into myself to find peace, find gratitude, find happiness and I feel like I found that. I\u2019m happy. I\u2019m living life. I\u2019m not scared to retire because I know I\u2019ll be OK. That was the worry when I was [to] leave boxing. What was I going to do? That was my whole identity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spence\u2019s father, Errol Sr., attended the fight against Crawford. When asked how stunned he was to see his son get beaten so badly, he didn\u2019t answer for 15 seconds before saying, \u201cI don\u2019t have any opinion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When asked again specifically about the fight,\u00a0Spence Sr. said, \u201cThere\u2019s a lot behind the scenes. I\u2019m not going to get into it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Spence Jr. offered little in an interview with The News about the events leading to the Crawford fight. However, Spence told Hall of Fame fighter Andre Ward on The Art of Ward podcast that he suffered a rib injury in training that curtailed sparring sessions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t spar,\u201d Spence told Ward. \u201cSix weeks out I got a cortisone shot in my ribs. My ribs were hurting. I got a cortisone shot. I had to get cleared for that the week of the fight.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/other-sports\/2023\/09\/13\/desotos-errol-spence-is-sticking-with-his-longtime-trainer-for-terence-crawford-rematch\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derrick James, Spence\u2019s trainer for the Crawford fight,<\/a> declined to comment when asked about the injury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/other-sports\/article\/errol-spence-jr-fight-tim-tszyu-australia-22237240.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spence\u2019s new trainer, Ronnie Shields,<\/a> offered surprise when discussing the lack of sparring for the Crawford fight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe that when I heard that,\u201d said Shields, a former boxer. \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it. But I never talked to him about that. That\u2019s the past. I concentrate on the future [with] what we have right now. We can\u2019t erase the past; the past is gone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The past haunted Spence. (Vernon Bryant\/The Dallas Morning News)<\/p>\n<p>Vernon Bryant\/Staff Photographer<\/p>\n<p>Life in the fast lane<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2019\/10\/10\/ferrari-driver-suffers-serious-injuries-in-crash-in-north-oak-cliff\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spence was injured in a car accident in October 2019<\/a>, suffering damage to his teeth and some soft tissues after flipping his Ferrari on Riverfront Boulevard near downtown Dallas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/crime\/2019\/10\/17\/boxer-errol-spence-jr-faces-dwi-charge-after-wreck-that-sent-ferrari-rolling-down-dallas-street\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He later pled guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Spence didn\u2019t stop drinking or driving fast. He talks about multiple accidents in his life. He tried to move away from the party life by purchasing 60 acres of land in Red Oak, where he built a house. He loves spending time with horses and cattle. He loved boxing, too. The sport was too much to give up, so he kept fighting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The loss to Crawford allowed Spence to look more at himself. He felt his body never fully recovered from the car accidents and partying. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He needed to get away. He stopped drinking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spence rediscovered his three kids (two girls and a boy) along with his parents and significant other. In the last three years,\u00a0Spence said he traveled to 10 different countries to find this peace. He wanted to learn about different cultures and cities. He mentioned going to Tokyo and Saint Martin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been three years since he\u2019s been able to find that peace,\u201d said his close friend, Stuart Wallace. \u201cJust think about someone going through something traumatic, there\u2019s going to be a time they\u2019re going to get their thoughts together and realize everything they\u2019ve gone through. You\u2019re not going to stay in damn drama and traumatic situations forever, you\u2019re going to search and find something that\u2019s better. So, yeah, you can see it all on him. He\u2019s quicker, he\u2019s sharper because his mind is in a better place.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the injuries suffered in the car accident weren\u2019t life-threatening, he had health issues in the ring. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/other-sports\/2024\/01\/09\/errol-spence-jr-reveals-cataract-surgery-says-loss-vs-terence-crawford-was-past-due\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He suffered a detached retina while training for a fight against Manny Pacquiao that was eventually canceled<\/a>. \u00a0There was the rib injury going into the Crawford fight, an event Spence\u2019s best friend Jourdan Isom says, \u201cI don\u2019t have to go into detail on that. A lot of guys wouldn\u2019t have gone in there. He definitely wasn\u2019t 100%.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s good, man,\u201d Isom said. \u201cSometimes when you\u2019re away from the sport a little bit you have the time to focus on what\u2019s really important, and in reality boxing is cool, it\u2019s a dope sport, there\u2019s bravado, lifestyle is like none other. James sued Spence in Dallas County court over unpaid fees for his services. The case is closed and James and Spence declined to comment about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spence\u2019s father hired James when his son was a young fighter. The two men were always together. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, there\u2019s a relationship,\u201d Spence said on the difficulty of leaving James. \u201cIt\u2019s the way of life. People have been married for a long time and twice as long as we\u2019ve been together and they break up.\u00a0It happens that\u2019s life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It led Spence to Shields. The two have known each other since Spence fought in amateur tournaments across Texas. Shields joked he could never find a boxer to beat Spence in the amateurs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now he\u2019s got him in the pros. He\u2019s got a fighter who will do something different for his fight against Tszyu. There\u2019s an expectation Spence will use more head movement and quicker exchanges, where Spence will land punches and back out of the way. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to listen to your body,\u201d Shields said. \u201cThe body tells all. From what I\u2019m seeing from Errol right now, he feels rejuvenated. When I see him sparring with the guys, he\u2019s in there taking punches and punching back, I see that he\u2019s ready, he\u2019s ready for anybody, so that tells me the way he works I have to stop him from working. That\u2019s how much he wants this. I\u2019ve never over-trained a fighter in my life and I never will.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spence has never trained outside of Dallas for a fight. He comes to Shields\u2019 gym about 30 minutes outside of Houston, settled in an industrial park about two blocks from the post office. He goes back to Red Oak to chill with the family on the weekends before coming back here for work. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If he loses, Spence will still have peace of mind because he doesn\u2019t believe boxing defines him. For years, Spence thought boxing was his identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed the last three years and it made me dig deep and find stuff that I like and find an identity outside of boxing,\u201d Spence said. \u201cIf this is my last fight then I\u2019m OK with it because I\u2019m OK with everything [and] how it went on and how it transpired, and I know I can live without getting into the ring ever again.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What to know about Spence-Tszyu\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What:\u00a0Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 knockouts) vs. Tim\u00a0Tszyu (27-3, 18 knockouts), 12 rounds, middleweights<\/p>\n<p>When: The four-fight card starts at 8 p.m. Saturday (Central time)<\/p>\n<p>How to watch: The PBC Pay-Per-View event will be available on Prime Video and\u00a0DAZN for $79.99.
