Adelaide: Collingwood champion Scott Pendlebury says the Adelaide Oval crowd\u2019s booing of Isaac Quaynor on Thursday night says more about those fans than it does about his teammate.<\/p>\n
Playing his 150th game, Quaynor was jeered by large sections of the 50,109-strong crowd for every one of his 20 disposals as the Magpies turned a 27-point first-half deficit into a powerful 34-point win<\/a> over Adelaide.<\/p>\n Quaynor was also targeted by Crows supporters in last year\u2019s qualifying final<\/a>, a fortnight after he was the victim of a homophobic slur<\/a> from Adelaide star Izak Rankine.<\/p>\n \u201cI definitely noticed it at the start of the game,\u201d said Pendlebury<\/a>, who racked up 29 disposals, six clearances and kicked a momentum-turning goal late in the second quarter.<\/p>\n \u201cIt probably says more about the crowd than it does about Isaac.<\/p>\n \u201cStuff happens in footy all the time, but I think as supporters from all sides, and the league in general, we\u2019ve just got to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n Pendlebury doesn\u2019t believe Quaynor was rattled by the hostile reception, but said he and his fellow Magpies will rally around the gun backman regardless.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019ll be fine,\u201d Pendlebury said.<\/p>\n \u201cIsaac probably knew it was going to come. We\u2019re all big boys and we\u2019ll get around Isaac, but he\u2019ll be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n Related Article Victorious Collingwood coach Craig McRae brought his daughter Charlie to the post-match press conference. He used the opportunity to speak about the values he has instilled in his family around not booing sportspeople while questioning why Quaynor was being treated as though he had done something wrong.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve got my little daughter in the room \u2013 she\u2019s 10,\u201d McRae said.<\/p>\n \u201cI teach her [that] we don\u2019t boo. That\u2019s all I can control.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a fascinating narrative around why they would boo him.<\/p>\n \u201cMy understanding is he was the victim of a homophobic slur, and he\u2019s getting booed for that? It\u2019s a fascinating world we live in.\u201d<\/p>\n While unhappy with the behaviour of those fans, McRae also made it clear he held no ill will towards Rankine, who he sought out after the final siren.<\/p>\n \u201cI actually grabbed Izak Rankine at the end of the game and said, \u2018We\u2019ve got great respect for you, young man\u2019,\u201d McRae revealed.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople are allowed to make mistakes \u2013 they are. We\u2019re all human.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve got great respect for him \u2013 he\u2019s a sensational player.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know him as a person, but the way he stood up and overcame what was \u2013 [he] took it on the shoulders \u2013 there\u2019s something to be said about that.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s life, isn\u2019t it? Make a mistake, fix it and improve yourself.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were rapt in our Isaac\u2019s game tonight. Jeez, he must have had the ball a lot early because he got booed a lot.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ll get our arms around him [Quaynor] and show how much we love him.\u201d<\/p>\n Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks during the week implored Crows fans to treat Quaynor with respect.
