While most were content to travel to the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony<\/a> via car or public transport, the King and Queen<\/a> opted for something else entirely.<\/p>\n

Glasgow\u2019s Hydro stadium erupted in cheers as Charles<\/a> and Camilla emerged on stage from inside Doctor Who\u2019s iconic TARDIS on Thursday night (Friday morning AEST).<\/p>\n

The fictional time-travel machine, which famously takes the form of a police\u00a0public call\u00a0box \u2013 which were designed by Scottish architect Gilbert MacKenzie Trench \u2013 had undertaken a whirlwind journey before appearing on stage in a cloud of smoke.<\/p>\n

A video shown on the Hydro\u2019s big screen showed cyclist Sir Chris Hoy and actor Greg McHugh steering the TARDIS through Scotland, passing various landmarks, under instructions from the palace to get the King and Queen to the stadium.<\/p>\n

When the TARDIS arrived at Balmoral, the British royal family\u2019s sprawling Scottish residence, two shadowy figures were seen \u2018boarding\u2019 the spacecraft.<\/p>\n

After materialising on stage with lights and smoke, the door of the police box opened and out stepped a clearly chuffed Charles and Camilla, dressed in shades of blue. <\/p>\n

Per The Telegraph<\/a>, the King has been a Doctor Who fan since age 15.<\/p>\n

If the skit gave you a touch of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu, there\u2019s good reason \u2013 it\u2019s not the first time a monarch has made a pop culture-themed entrance at an Opening Ceremony. <\/p>\n

In 2012,\u00a0the late Queen Elizabeth II arrived at the opening of the London Olympics with the help of James Bond<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The monarch also made a speech to open the Games.\u00a0AP Photo\/Kin Cheung<\/p>\n

The Queen teamed up with actor Daniel Craig for the skit, in which the iconic secret agent \u2018collected\u2019 her from Buckingham Palace \u2013 to the delight of fans, she greeted Craig with, \u201cGood evening, Mr Bond\u201d \u2013\u00a0\u00a0before escorting her into a helicopter. The pair then \u2018parachuted\u2019 into the Olympic stadium.<\/p>\n

Of course, that skit was also pre-recorded and Her Majesty simply strolled in to the ceremony, but it was a lot of fun.<\/p>\n

After enjoying the proceedings, the King had the honour of declaring the Commonwealth Games open, addressing the crowd at the end of the ceremony.<\/p>\n

\u201cI extend my warmest gratitude to the city of Glasgow, to all the athletes, to the organisers, volunteers and all those who have made this event possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
