{"id":820530,"date":"2026-07-24T09:12:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T09:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/820530\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T09:12:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T09:12:07","slug":"council-liaising-with-authorities-following-first-suspected-case-of-bird-flu-in-queensland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/820530\/","title":{"rendered":"Council liaising with authorities following first suspected case of bird flu in Queensland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Redland City Council is liaising with Biosecurity Queensland following confirmation of a suspected case of avian influenza (bird flu) on Moreton Island.<\/p>\n<p>A deceased migratory seabird (giant petrel) that was found washed up on Moreton Island has returned a suspected positive pathology result for H5N1 bird flu.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Mayor Julie Talty said Council had been advised that the deceased bird was undergoing further testing for final confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cH5N1 bird flu is a viral disease of birds that is highly contagious,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSick birds display signs of respiratory distress and inability to fly or stand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe virus spreads between animals via droppings, respiratory secretions, and contaminated environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it mostly affects birds, the disease has been known to infect some other mammals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Queensland Government has advised that human infection is rare and the risk to human health remains low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe national response to bird flu is being led by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAFF), with Biosecurity Queensland being the lead response agency in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil is encouraging everyone in our community to visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.gov.au\/biosecurity-trade\/pests-diseases-weeds\/animal\/avian-influenza\/resources\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DAFF website<\/a>\u00a0for a wealth of resources about bird flu, including tips on how to keep your birds and other pets safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Council will continue liaising with Biosecurity Queensland and other lead agencies to determine the appropriate response should sick or dead wildlife be reported in Redland City.<\/p>\n<p>What to do if you see sick or dead animals:<\/p>\n<p>AVOID\u00a0contact with sick or dead wild birds or wildlife and their environment. Do not touch or collect sick or dead wild birds or wildlife.RECORD\u00a0what you see.
