The University of Tasmania has launched its own basketball academy in a bid to create a clear development pathway for young basketballers from grassroots participation through to representative,\u00a0university\u00a0and elite level basketball.<\/p>\n
The UTAS Basketball Academy will\u00a0operate\u00a0from the\u00a0UniGym\u00a0on the\u00a0Sandy Bay Campus and\u00a0is open to athletes from the Under 12 age-group and above.<\/p>\n
The program will be led by\u00a0highly experienced\u00a0Head Coach, Anthony Stewart, alongside the\u00a0UniGym\u00a0and UTAS Sport teams.\u00a0The University says it will\u00a0offer a training environment on par with professional sporting clubs, unlike anything else currently available in the state.<\/p>\n
The Academy\u00a0will combine on-court training, strength and conditioning, athlete development\u00a0support, and access to the University\u2019s facilities to deliver elite athlete testing.<\/p>\n
Adding a unique mentoring dimension, athletes will also be able to learn from senior University Basketball League (UBL) players, connecting the next generation of Tasmanian basketballers with current university level talent.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0University has become a national leader in\u00a0Australian\u00a0University basketball in recent years, taking out\u00a0both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s titles in the 2025\u00a0New Balance University Basketball League. The University\u2019s 3\u00d73 Women\u2019s team represented Australia in Brazil for the 2025 International University Sports Federation (FISU) University World Cup 3\u00d73 Basketball.<\/p>\n
The University\u2019s Head of Sport, Kieran Perry said\u00a0the\u00a0Academy is a commitment to strengthening pathways between community sport and university level competition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Academy strengthens connections between junior basketball participation and\u00a0University\u00a0programs, helping athletes explore future pathways within university sport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Head coach, Anthony Stewart\u00a0said he is thrilled to continue coaching\u00a0basketball at\u00a0the University of Tasmania, having been a driving force behind\u00a0its\u00a0UBL success\u00a0in 2025\u00a0through the partnership with\u00a0Swissher\u00a0Hoops.\u00a0Mr Stewart\u00a0said\u00a0athletes will receive targeted support to enhance their technical skills, basketball IQ,\u00a0confidence\u00a0and overall athletic development.<\/p>\n
Designed for highly motivated athletes committed to reaching an elite or professional level, the Academy focuses on small group sessions to maximise individual attention and development time for each athlete.<\/p>\n
It\u00a0incorporates educational opportunities and mentoring, giving participants a holistic athlete development experience.
