The Boston Celtics<\/a> turned plenty of heads when they decided to trade Jaylen Brown<\/a> earlier this summer. After all, Brown was coming off a career year, having led Boston to the second seed in the Eastern Conference as their primary offensive option.<\/p>\n As Brad Stevens explored his options regarding Brown\u2019s trade market, rumors were swirling as to why the Celtics were looking to trade the All-Star forward. We now know that Brown\u2019s supermax contract and impending $140 million contract extension played a sizeable role in the decision.<\/p>\n During a recent appearance on the \u201cShump Street Podcast,\u201d<\/a> ESPN\u2019s Brian Windhorst provided further clarity on the Brown situation. The NBA<\/a> Insider noted that Brown\u2019s impact didn\u2019t match his high salary, which is why some NBA executives believe Derrick White<\/a> had a stronger all-around season.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re not arguing who\u2019s the better player tonight or even in this playoff series,\u201d Windhorst said. \u201cWhen they say value, they\u2019re looking at what a player\u2019s production is versus how much he costs. The Celtics were a better team this year with Derrick White on the court versus Jaylen Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n Windhorst continued.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can debate that and say that that\u2019s just not true. And I\u2019m not defending their side. I\u2019m not trying to say I agree. The numbers that they have say that when Derrick White played, and Jaylen Brown played, they were better with Derrick White; that Derrick White defensively had an elite season.\u00a0He was first-team all-defense, and that he cost $20 million less! So the word value means a different thing to your average fan.\u201d<\/p>\n Boston ultimately opted to trade Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> in return for Paul George<\/a>, two first-round draft picks and two second-round draft picks.<\/p>\n Celtics Avoided Jaylen Brown\u2019s Impending Extension<\/p>\n According to ESPN\u2019s Shams Charania, who was speaking on a July 17 episode of The Pat McAfee Show, the Celtics were apprehensive about giving Brown a two-year $140 million contract extension.<\/p>\n \u201cThey knew they were not going to offer Jaylen Brown the two-year, $140 million contract extension,\u201d\u00a0Charania said.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThat would have caused a reaction. Both sides would have had to have even harder conversations, and this could have gone another way. This could have gotten ugly potentially because you\u2019ve already shopped the player multiple times. In 2022, he was offered for\u00a0Kevin Durant<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Brown\u2019s extension wouldn\u2019t have kicked in for multiple years. As such, Boston would have been paying him north of $70 million at age 33 and 34. Following his trade to Philadelphia, Brown will become extension eligible again next summer.<\/p>\n Jaylen Brown Says There\u2019s \u201cNo Loyalty\u201d In The NBA<\/p>\n During a recent livestream with iShowSpeed, Brown joked that the popular streamer should avoid a career in professional basketball, citing a lack of loyalty.<\/p>\n \u201cI just got traded,\u201d Brown told iShowSpeed.<\/a> \u201cThey packed me up, bro. It\u2019s a crazy business, bro. Don\u2019t become a basketball player. There\u2019s no loyalty\u2026They packed me up. Sayonara. I\u2019m out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n Heading into the new season, all eyes will be on the Sixers to see how they find touches for Brown in what is a loaded roster.
