New York Knicks<\/a>\u2018 superstar Jalen Brunson<\/a> has arguably become one of the most impressive figures in the sporting world. Winning the NBA championship with the Knicks was undoubtedly an exceptional feat. However, it was Brunson\u2019s sacrifice<\/a> that effectively laid the foundations for New York\u2019s title-winning season.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Jalen Brunson signed a four-year, $156.5 million deal even though he could have waited another year and become eligible for a five-year, $269 million contract. The $113 million he left on the table effectively gave the Knicks the flexibility to structure their core and contend for the title.<\/p>\n

Jalen Brunson\u2019s sacrifice and achievements were acknowledged by many, as the guard even won the award for the Best Athlete in Men\u2019s Sports at the ESPYs<\/a>. Now, having ended New York\u2019s 53-year-long title drought, ESPN\u2019s Vince Goodwill<\/a> claimed Brunson is well within his rights to demand compensation.<\/p>\n

\u201cJalen Brunson is going to come get all of his money,\u201d\u00a0Goodwill commented. \u201cEvery bit of money- I won\u2019t say sacrificed. He signed a year early, right? He could have signed for $100 million more by signing later. Every dollar of that $280 million or $300 million that he\u2019s supposed to get, he\u2019s going to get all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Goodwill, Jalen Brunson will expect an extension worth nearly $300 million next year. In light of his achievements with the team, this may seem reasonable. Unfortunately, the current contract rules may not necessarily allow that.<\/p>\n

At the moment, Jalen Brunson is under contract with the Knicks for another three seasons, which includes a $43.3 million player option for the 2028-29 season. If Brunson intends to sign a new extension next summer, the best he can do is sign a four-year deal, which would be worth roughly $257 million, according to The New York Post\u2019s Stefan Bondy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Contrarily, should Brunson opt to wait another summer and decline his player option, the three-time All-Star is expected to be due for an even bigger payday, one Bondy forecasts to be worth roughly $417 million over five years.<\/p>\n

In all fairness, it can be argued that Jalen Brunson\u2019s heroics in the last two seasons, and particularly in this year\u2019s playoffs, justify such a price tag.<\/p>\n

Having averaged 28.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 46.5% from the field and 36.3% from beyond the arc, Brunson was nothing short of incandescent in the postseason this year. Given that he effectively dismantled Victor Wembanyama<\/a> and the San Antonio Spurs<\/a> in the NBA Finals, the 29-year-old was also rightfully named the NBA Finals MVP.<\/p>\n

On the face of it, Jalen Brunson\u2019s massive payday, regardless of when he chooses to accept it, will be well-deserved. Unfortunately, it will also create its own set of issues for the New York Knicks.<\/p>\n

Despite a phenomenal season, Knicks owner James Dolan has suddenly displayed an aversion to going into the second luxury tax apron<\/a>, which has already led to the departure of some key players. Additionally, with players like Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart due for an extension<\/a>, New York may find itself in a tricky position once the time comes for future negotiations.<\/p>\n

Jalen Brunson has already expressed his wishes to be compensated for his earlier sacrifice.
