{"id":821685,"date":"2026-07-24T21:42:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T21:42:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/821685\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T21:42:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T21:42:19","slug":"bitcoin-mine-generates-enough-heat-to-produce-nsw-brewerys-beer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/821685\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin mine generates enough heat to produce NSW brewery&#8217;s beer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the back corner of a busy brewery at Lisarow, on the NSW Central Coast, a set of computers is generating all the heat needed to make beer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The computers are bitcoin miners that run huge numbers of calculations every second, and receive cryptocurrency for doing so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The process consumes lots of energy, but the machines, run on solar power, actually help the brewers cut power costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t always do things the traditional way,&#8221; Hawkesbury Brewing Co operations manager Adam Neale said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to be on the cutting edge of doing something different.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with brown  hair, wearing a black jacket and sitting at a tall table. (ABC Central Coast: Sarah Forster)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The machines earn Hawkesbury Brewing Co about $2,000 a month, which almost covers its power bills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The bitcoin mine only runs when the brewery has too much solar energy, which means it costs nothing to run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We hit a crossroads where we knew we couldn&#8217;t save any more energy anywhere else,&#8221; Mr Neale said.<\/p>\n<p>How does it work?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sean Foley, a professor of applied finance at Macquarie University, said mining cryptocurrency was a very energy-intensive process.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Large brown glass bottles on a factory conveyer belt.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/5b3f1b22cfbe5640aa21b00223c47639.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Hot water generated by the bitcoin mine is used to clean bottles as well as produce beer. (ABC Central Coast: Sarah Forster)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[The computers] get really, really hot \u2026 because you&#8217;re pumping so much power through these systems,&#8221; Professor Foley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You might be using in the order of 20 or 30 times what a regular PC would [use].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Foley said the heat could be harnessed as a useful by-product.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a waste product, effectively, of the bitcoin mining process,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you can utilise that heat for some sort of purpose \u2026 for heating, that&#8217;s fantastic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A six-pack of beer cans sitting on a wooden table. (ABC Central Coast: Sarah Forster)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While cryptocurrency mining is banned in some parts of the world because of the amount of energy it uses, the brewery only uses renewable energy, leaving no carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Neale began exploring the idea to avoid the fees that were charged for sending excess solar energy back into the grid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;d be nice to give it back to the grid and get paid handsomely for it but it doesn&#8217;t happen so we need to be able to use that power to then power the factory for the rest of the day,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Storing the solar energy in a battery was not an option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An aerial view of a factory roof covered in solar panels.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/96565e1d91ae8111bb86c4d003321a5d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Solar panels on the roof of the brewery generate electricity to run the bitcoin mine. Flammability&#8217;s always a problem. Insurance companies just don&#8217;t like the fact that you&#8217;re storing electricity,&#8221; Mr Neale said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Instead of batteries, the brewery installed 16 bitcoin miners into a tub filled with a non-conductive liquid that looks like water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The liquid cools the computers, and in turn heats up to about 90 degrees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A heat exchange process uses that liquid to heat the water used in the beer-making process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We found there was enough heat coming off those miners to heat our incoming town water supply,&#8221; Mr Neale said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We can heat our water up and store it for days on end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Everything that we need to do with hot water is done via that process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A large metal tub on a metal floor. (ABC Central Coast: Sarah Forster)<\/p>\n<p>More potential uses<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Neale believes the technique could be applied in other ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We can see the potential for this for public swimming pools, recirculation of hot water in apartment buildings [and] manufacturing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you need hot water on site and lots of it, it&#8217;s a way of being able to produce that hot water for the day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Colourful cardboard cases of beer stacked on shelves.
