{"id":822133,"date":"2026-07-25T03:06:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T03:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/822133\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T03:06:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T03:06:19","slug":"nt-government-opens-door-to-global-ai-industry-powered-by-beetaloo-gas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/822133\/","title":{"rendered":"NT government opens door to global AI industry powered by Beetaloo gas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As the AI industry arrives in the Northern Territory, Australia&#8217;s most isolated and least populated jurisdiction wants to grow its gas and data sectors at the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The NT government has thrown its support behind both industries as 12 data centre proponents eye a range of locations from rural blocks near Darwin to vast cattle stations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The companies have arrived just in time to take advantage of natural gas <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-11\/beetaloo-energy-australia-final-investment-decision\/106131964\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106131964\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">due to flow from the Beetaloo Basin later this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It has sparked alarm from environmental campaigners, who say it will undermine Australia&#8217;s climate targets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A gas-fired data centre boom would also take place shortly after the federal government outlined <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.industry.gov.au\/publications\/expectations-data-centres-and-ai-infrastructure-developers#how-the-expectations-work\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">expectations that new data centres and AI infrastructure supported the energy transition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Water use is also front of mind for green groups and the cattle industry, which holds &#8220;great concern&#8221; that an AI revolution could put extra pressure on remote infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Gas-fired tech industry<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Development of gas fields in the Beetaloo Basin has helped trigger a rush of data centre proposals, which recently prompted government minister Robyn Cahill to claim the Territory could become the &#8220;data centre capital of the globe&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Data centres require considerable amounts of constant power, and developers are keen on the prospect of consistent gas flows from the Beetaloo, 500 kilometres south-east of Darwin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-13\/data-centre-hyperscalers-target-northern-territory\/106898282\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Is the NT ready for an AI boom?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The NT&#8217;s sunny skies, natural gas reserves and proximity to Asia have caught the attention of a dozen data centre developers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The industry&#8217;s momentum is so great, gas company Beetaloo Energy has launched a wholly owned subsidiary, Beetaloo Digital. The company was given exclusive planning rights for a parcel of land near Darwin by the NT government for a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-22\/beetaloo-digital-energy-ai-hyperscale-data-centre-40-billion\/106943690\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106943690\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2-gigawatt data centre worth $40 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Another proposal, put forward by <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-01\/data-centre-planned-outback-nt\/106862398\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106862398\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Energy North for the remote Murranji Station<\/a>, would use solar and gas-fired energy to generate 1 gigawatt of power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The power requirements of both are significantly higher than the total peak demand of the Darwin-Katherine power grid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Environment Centre NT rural areas campaigner Pauline Cass said outer-Darwin residents, like herself, were worried about the environmental consequences.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pauline Cass stands outside wearing a green t-shirt\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/f6fe3dcc0827d8ce9700a8f437955102.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Pauline Cass is concerned about heavy industry and data centres in Darwin&#8217;s rural area. (ABC News: Dane Hirst)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think we&#8217;re basically hitting every one of the government&#8217;s policies,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re not taking from the grid.
