{"id":822368,"date":"2026-07-25T05:48:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T05:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/822368\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T05:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T05:48:14","slug":"labor-national-conference-richard-marles-says-china-is-australias-largest-security-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/822368\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor National Conference: Richard Marles says China is Australia\u2019s \u2018largest security anxiety\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Richard Marles has characterised China as Australia\u2019s \u201clargest security anxiety\u201d while arguing the government must continue engaging with Beijing despite ongoing strategic tensions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Addressing the third and final day of Labor\u2019s National Conference in Adelaide, the Defence Minister said Australia\u2019s future security and success would depend on strengthening relationships across the Indo-Pacific and beyond, including with key partners such as India, Japan and the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">He also stressed the importance of maintain ties with China, describing the relationship as essential despite the challenges it presents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-3mk41m-StyledText eze0guv9\">Sign up to The Nightly&#8217;s newsletters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1r9pdr5-StyledSubText eze0guv8\">Get the first look at the digital newspaper, curated daily stories and breaking headlines delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>By continuing you agree to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thenightly.com.au\/subscription-terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sevenwestmedia.com.au\/privacy-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThey are our largest trading partner, but they are also our largest security anxiety, and stabilising that relationship has been a significant achievement of our government, and we will continue to work with China where we can and disagree where we must,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cOf course, our most important relationship, the cornerstone of our foreign defence, our strategic policy, is our alliance with the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt has been in existence for decades&#8230; and it will be for decades to come, in the context of the past, and with the promise of the future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cOur job is to manage the present, and we do have a good relationship with this (Trump) administration, both in terms of delivering AUKUS, but actually more significantly in meeting our security obligations to each other as alliance partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Meanwhile, Labor managed to tightly control the conference by ironing out an anticipated heated debate on the Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">While backbencher Ed Husic had agitated for an Israel-Palestine resolution which called for stronger language including \u201cgenocide\u201d, the debate had been muted by Saturday morning when their chapter on foreign and defence policy kicked off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Instead the party heard a statement by Labor\u2019s Basem Abdo and Josh Burns, which had been the culmination of three months of work to clarify the party\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">But Mr Husic told reporters on Saturday he was \u201cdisappointed\u201d that his efforts were quashed and \u201csurprised\u201d at what he described was an \u201cextraordinary amount of energy that has been applied to stop this\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Mr Husic said the seconder who had been slated to support his movement had pulled out overnight, only finding out this morning that the resolution wouldn\u2019t stand up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cClearly today\u2019s a big disappointment. It\u2019s a big disappointment because we haven\u2019t had a chance to talk to an issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWhat was disappointing. Just see the resolution is not going to be argued for a conference.
