Oscar Piastri has told Carlos Sainz to \u201clook in the mirror\u201d in a scathing assessment of the shocking blunder that flipped his Hungarian Grand Prix on its head on Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Australian was on-course for his first win of the F1 season until disaster struck in the second-half of the race. <\/p>\n

Backmarker Sainz failed to give way to race-leader Piastri, costing him crucial seconds that opened the door to teammate Lando Norris overtaking him on pit strategy. <\/p>\n

\u201cIs he f***ing stupid or what? Get out of the f***ing way, you idiot! Oh my God,\u201d Piastri said over team radio, angrier than we\u2019ve ever seen him before. <\/p>\n

Piastri also took aim at his team for pitting him into traffic while allowing Norris \u2014 who won the race \u2014 to run longer and capitalise on his lost time. <\/p>\n

His race engineer insisted \u201cOscar, that\u2019s Sainz that cost us that. Target is to get to the end on this tyre.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Piastri was still furious.<\/p>\n

\u201cMate, just don\u2019t f***ing talk to me now,\u201d he said. \u201cNice of you guys to factor that one in by the way, thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Things then went from bad to worse with Piastri ultimately not finishing the race due to a gearbox failure on lap 56.<\/p>\n

After the race, Piastri had calmed down about McLaren\u2019s strategy, saying it was \u201cnot very reasonable\u201d of him to expect his team to not pit its drivers when it did.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just more very upset in the moment about what had happened. I think the timing of my pit stop was fine, we wanted to beat Lewis (Hamilton) and that\u2019s what we needed to do to,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Piastri maintained the rage, however, when it came to the Sainz incident \u2014 especially after being told of the Spaniard\u2019s excuse.<\/p>\n

Sainz \u2014 who copped a five-second penalty for his careless driving \u2014 said he didn\u2019t get a blue light on his steering wheel and was too consumed in his battle with Fernando Alonso for 17th place. <\/p>\n

But he curiously added that it was \u201cimpossible\u201d for him to avoid making contact anyway as Piastri was in his blind spot, while appearing to place some blame on the Australian. <\/p>\n

\u201cTo be honest, I\u2019m really sorry for Oscar,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I think I have a pretty good excuse for what happened. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if he could also have been a bit more careful, given that he\u2019s the one fighting for podiums, and position himself a bit more cautiously, with all the issues we were all having with the blue flags.\u201d <\/p>\n

Piastri didn\u2019t hold back in response.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, that\u2019s no excuse at all. That\u2019s got to be one of the dumbest things I\u2019ve ever seen on a racetrack,\u201d he told Viaplay.<\/p>\n

In a separate interview with Sky Sports, he added: \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe what happened. <\/p>\n

\u201cGetting crashed into by a lapped car is never one of the things you expect that can go wrong in your race, and today it was, so I don\u2019t really care if he didn\u2019t see me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that he didn\u2019t and no one told him, or there was a lack of complete awareness, is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking of Sainz, he added: \u201cHe\u2019s quite critical of others, and others have given him some stick before for being frustrating on-track.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you go and do something like that, maybe you should look in the mirror a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM\u2019 <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, McLaren team boss Andrea Stella said there were no hard feelings with Piastri after his sarcastic jab over team radio about the team\u2019s pit strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cImmediately after the race, Oscar clarified that his comment was a comment in anger,\u201d Stella told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were a couple of unfortunate episodes. Obviously, the most important is the fact that Oscar had a collision with a backmarker. And at the same time, once Lando was released, then his pace was simply mega. I think he found half a second per lap. And this pace meant that Lando could be ahead of Oscar.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI think Oscar understood it immediately.
