XPeng says the current wave of Chinese car brands entering Australia will eventually give way to a smaller group of winners, arguing future success will depend on becoming an AI company as much as an automotive manufacturer.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Asked whether Australia’s growing list of Chinese brands could all succeed, XPeng\u00a0executives\u00a0said the market would eventually become\u00a0“more concentrated at the top”\u00a0as weaker players fell away.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They\u00a0stopped short of predicting which brands would\u00a0disappear but\u00a0argued the next generation of automotive leaders would need far more than manufacturing\u00a0expertise.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“You need to be both an automotive company and a tech company,”\u00a0vice\u00a0chairman\u00a0and president Brian Wu\u00a0said. “You need to be an AI company as well as an advanced manufacturer.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
He\u00a0compared\u00a0today’s automotive landscape to the smartphone industry, where technological disruption saw some brands\u00a0emerge\u00a0as global leaders while others faded away.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The company believes artificial intelligence and intelligent driving technology will\u00a0ultimately become\u00a0a bigger differentiator than simply launching more models or competing on price.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It\u00a0pointed to its broader AI ecosystem as proof of that strategy, with investments spanning humanoid robots, autonomous\u00a0robotaxis\u00a0and its personal flying car division, which has already amassed over 7000 pre-orders in China ahead of production.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The company says those projects are built on the same AI and software architecture as its vehicles, with Australia’s roadmap eventually extending beyond cars.<\/p>\n
Subject to local regulations,\u00a0XPeng\u00a0plans to introduce its autonomous driving technology locally before the end of 2027, while saying Australia could also become one of the first international markets to receive its commercial humanoid robot once it reaches production.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That philosophy also underpins\u00a0the brand’s own positioning, with the company describing itself as a premium technology brand rather than simply another Chinese automaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Our brand is perceived as a premium brand \u2013 technology, but premium,”\u00a0XPeng\u00a0international\u00a0development and\u00a0service\u00a0centres\u00a0boss Alex Tang said.<\/p>\n
Tang said XPeng was aiming to become\u00a0“a leader in the AI car segment”, positioning\u00a0it\u00a0alongside Tesla rather than mainstream rivals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When asked whether BYD was a competitor, Tang was blunt:\u00a0“We really don’t think BYD is our competitor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We have different positioning, different products and different customers.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
