{"id":827256,"date":"2026-07-27T16:15:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T16:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/827256\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T16:15:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T16:15:15","slug":"tom-alsop-sussex-batsman-moves-to-gloucestershire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/827256\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Alsop: Sussex batsman moves to Gloucestershire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Tom Alsop will move to Gloucestershire on a three-year deal at the end of the current season, bringing the curtain down on five years at Sussex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has made big contributions in both red and white ball cricket since arriving at Hove, initially on loan from Hampshire in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Alsop was a key member of the Championship side which achieved promotion to Division One in 2024, a season in which the T20 side made it to the Blast finals day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He has also played Hundred cricket for Trent Rockets and Sunrisers Leeds as well as Big Bash with Brisbane Heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Speaking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sussexcricket.co.uk\/news\/tom-alsop-join-gloucestershire\" class=\"ssrcss-18834jl-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">club website, external<\/a>, both Alsop and head coach Paul Farbrace conceded Sussex&#8217;s financial troubles have contributed to the move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Tommy is a high quality player and has shown that on many occasions, in all forms [of the game]. It is with sadness that our financial situation has made it necessary for Tommy to move on,&#8221; said Farbrace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sussex, who have been docked points in all competitions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/cricket\/articles\/cy8pzlkx2ygo\" class=\"ssrcss-18834jl-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">placed in special measures by the ECB<\/a> for &#8220;sustained operating losses&#8221; are also under salary cap restrictions until 2028. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Alsop added: &#8220;It&#8217;s with a heavy heart that I&#8217;ve made this decision, knowing that the picture is uncertain over my future here with the club&#8217;s financial position. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;However, I&#8217;ve got to think about my family and what&#8217;s best going forward with an offer from Gloucestershire CCC and as professional cricketer at my stage security is very important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sussex are currently fifth in Division One of the County Championship, 11 points behind leaders Nottinghamshire with six games to play, while Gloucestershire sit bottom of Division Two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Tom is a fantastic batter with the ability to perform across all formats.
