\u201cI had trouble standing up from low chairs and deep couches without someone offering me an arm,\u201d she explained, noting that there were eventually points where she couldn\u2019t walk without \u201cconsiderable help.\u201d<\/p>\n
After the two-time Grammy Award winner underwent \u201can extensive evaluation\u201d at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, she was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Her treatment, Simon said, has included medication to help with stiffness and other symptoms.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no tidy or predictable schedule to the illness. It does not consult my calendar before deciding what kind of day I am going to have,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Simon revealed she also had surgery on her face for basal cell carcinoma, which made her self-conscious about her appearance.<\/p>\n
\u201cBetween my mobility issues, the Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis, the surgery, and the emotional effects of it all, withdrawing from public view was the most palatable reaction,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Simon added: \u201cI do not consider Parkinson\u2019s a gift or a blessing. It is neither. It is difficult, frustrating, and sometimes frightening. I am still learning how to live with it and how to accept it without feeling that I have surrendered something essential.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite her health challenges, Simon confirmed her new album, Comes in Waves, comes out August 14.<\/p>\n
\u201cWorking on the music gave shape to days that did not always have much shape. It gave me somewhere to go without having to leave the room,\u201d she said. \u201cIt reminded me that illness can change your life without becoming the whole of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the end of her statement, Simon acknowledged that now she \u201cmoves more slowly\u201d and \u201cleans on others more than I once did.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI have learned to accept that every day will look a little different,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut I am still very much here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Simon rose to fame in the early 1970s for her self-titled debut album, which won her the Grammy for Best New Artist.<\/p>\n
Some of her most famous songs include \u201cYou\u2019re So Vain,\u201d \u201cThe Right Thing to Do,\u201d \u201cHaven\u2019t Got Time for the Pain,\u201d\u201cAnticipation\u201d and \u201cNobody Does It Better,\u201d which she recorded for the 1977 James Bond movie \u201cThe Spy Who Loved Me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Simon has two children, daughter Sally, 52, and son Ben, 49, with her first ex-husband, music legend James Taylor.<\/p>\n
Her second marriage was to writer and businessman James Hart. They divorced in 2007.<\/p>\n
