Pauline Hanson told a podcast last year she believed \u201cyour employer should not be responsible\u201d for providing paid domestic violence leave, while her colleague Malcolm Roberts<\/a> recently referred to the family court as the \u201cslaughterhouse of the nation\u201d, in the latest One Nation comments critical of the family law system to emerge.<\/p>\n

Hanson claimed on a 2021 podcast that domestic violence was being \u201cused as a weapon\u201d in court proceedings, and criticised domestic violence groups for focusing on support for women.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel for the children, I feel for the parents and I\u2019m sick of these feminists who are trying to take over this whole thing and who are actually driving their own agenda. I\u2019m sick and tired of hearing that men are the only perpetrators and they\u2019re denied the right to see their children,\u201d Hanson told the Dad Talk Today podcast in 2021.<\/p>\n

Hanson\u2019s past comments on domestic violence have drawn renewed scrutiny after a 4BC radio interview last week<\/a> in which she said family violence was \u201cwrong\u201d but \u201cit\u2019s also a two-way street\u201d.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Broken Fathers podcast<\/a> last year, Hanson described paid leave for those experiencing family and domestic violence as \u201cridiculous\u201d, calling it \u201cdomestic violence holiday leave\u201d. She also suggested domestic violence was taking police away from \u201creal crime\u201d and called for the family law system to be \u201cwound back\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hanson later claimed her 4BC comments had been taken \u201cout of context\u201d and denied she had downplayed domestic violence.<\/p>\n

But the newly unearthed comments show the full breadth of One Nation\u2019s criticism of the family law system.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Hanson for a podcast titled Unemployable Media in January 2025, during a discussion about challenges facing business owners, the podcast host brought up the issue of domestic violence leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody in Australia would say domestic violence isn\u2019t a horrible thing, but you\u2019ve got 10 days,\u201d the host began saying, before Hanson interjected.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should not be tied up in your employment. Your employer should not be responsible,\u201d Hanson said.<\/p>\n

The federal Labor government in 2022 legislated for 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave<\/a> annually as a workplace entitlement in the National Employment Standards, upgrading the previous five days\u2019 unpaid leave. The cost is borne by employers.<\/p>\n

Some businesses raised concerns when the change was legislated, but the social services minister, Tanya Plibersek, said only \u201ca tiny number of people\u201d used the leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they use it to get medical help, report to police, move to a safer home or go to court\u201d.<\/p>\n

The ACTU president, Michele O\u2019Neil, said the scheme was \u201can essential lifeline available to workers facing some horrifically dangerous situations\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the 2021 interview, the One Nation leader criticised \u201cfeminist\u201d groups in the domestic violence system.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have the domestic violence organisations, they\u2019re getting millions of dollars in funding for it. You\u2019ve got these refuges \u2013 and I can see that a woman needs to be protected if they don\u2019t have a house to actually go to with the kids, a safe place to go \u2026 but you\u2019ve got to offer the same to a man. You can\u2019t just look after women,\u201d Hanson said.<\/p>\n

Later in the interview Hanson claimed domestic violence was \u201cused as a weapon\u201d in court.<\/p>\n

\u201cDomestic violence here is, the person can go in and say \u2018I\u2019m in fear\u2019 and that can be domestic violence. If you text your partner a number of times \u2018I want to see my child\u2019, that\u2019s harassment, that can be domestic violence. If you say \u2018honey, sorry why\u2019d you buy another pair of shoes? We\u2019ve got the rent to pay\u2019, that\u2019s domestic violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberts, whose advocacy of conspiracy theories<\/a> has come under scrutiny, also criticised the family court system in a May interview with the rightwing podcast Cafe Locked Out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe family law court, a friend of mine describes the family law system as the slaughterhouse of the nation and he\u2019s right,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s set up to divide. It\u2019s set up to make money for lawyers. It\u2019s set up to smash the family.\u201d<\/p>\n

One Nation and Hanson\u2019s office did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
