(Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

getty

More than two months ago, sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson of the American rock band Heart performed at the 2026 Annual Grammy Hall of Fame Gala at Los Angeles’ Beverly Hilton. They were one of several esteemed musical acts — among them 2PAC, Janet Jackson and Radiohead — whose recordings were newly inducted into this year’s Grammy Hall of Fame class. For Heart, their 1975 debut album, Dreamboat Annie, was among the honored works.

“We went and played three songs from Dreamboat Annie,” Nancy Wilson recently recalls about the event. “The first lineup [of the band] was all in the audience. It was a really great feeling. It was really cool to see everybody again and to sort of pat ourselves on the collective back for not only done a cool thing 50 years ago that still kind of resonates today. We’re not on stretchers yet. We’re still kind of kicking ass out there.”

First released through the Canadian indie label Mushroom Records, and subsequently issued in the U.S. the following year, Dreamboat Annie was a smash hit containing the beloved songs “Magic Man,” “Crazy On You” and the title track. It introduced the signature hallmarks of Heart’s sound: Led Zeppelin-influenced hard rock, acoustic folk music, Ann’s stirring lead vocals and Nancy’s ripping guitar. Fifty years later, Dreamboat Annie remains one of classic rock’s outstanding debuts.

“In [our] early 20s, we knew we were competent enough musically to pull it off,” Wilson says of the original band lineup — herself, Ann, guitarists Roger Fisher and Howard Leese, bassist Steve Fossen and drummer Mike Derosier — all of whom were based in Vancouver in the early years.

CIRCA 1977: (Clockwise from left) Roger Fisher, Howard Leese, Steve Fossen, Michael Derosier, Nancy Wilson, Ann Wilson of the rock band “Heart” pose for a portrait in circa 1977. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

getty

Heart signed with Mushroom Records after being turned down by the other major record labels. “We put little reel-to-reel demo tapes together with letters written on typewriters,” Wilson says. “And we mailed them to the offices of the big record companies. Of course, they all just probably got stacked on a big stack, like scripts in Hollywood. Nobody ever read them, and they just went to the shredder. But it was a local paint company family who owned this studio in Vancouver, British Columbia. They were music fans. And there were some cool guys renting the studio to make albums.

“During the Vietnam War, a lot of Americans were up there to avoid the draft,” she continues. “So we kind of ended up all up there for that reason. We were playing in a club, a cabaret called Oil Can Harry’s. And the guy that was a producer in the little studio saw Ann sing. He was like, ‘I want to make a record with that girl.’ So Ann’s voice was the lure that brought the rest of the band up to Vancouver, and me to eventually join the band and make the album on an indie label called Mushroom.”

Recording the album with producer Mike Flicker, the songs on Dreamboat Annie were predominantly written by the Wilsons, including the mystical and semi-autobiographical “Magic Man” and the dramatic “Crazy On You” — both of which became staples of classic rock radio for decades.

“You fall in love with something because you created it,” Wilson says. “So you can’t get enough of it if it sounds good…it’s so exciting when something like that sounds so good to you, like “Crazy on You” in particular.

“And “Magic Man,” too, because it had a lot of intricate departures and musical journeys that you went on — there was a lot of kind of tricky, cool stuff that we would put in there so that other musicians would go, ‘Wow, how do you do that? Let’s learn that.’ So we were pretty sure people would like it because we loved it.”

Heart’s first tour for the album lasted two years, seeing them eventually break through into the States. “We did the homework to get it noticed,” Wilson says. “We plugged it and plugged it and plugged it. And then it sort of caught fire. We kept getting bigger and bigger offers as the album expanded into territory by territory.

“We did everything. We really learned how to play. And we only had one album. So we did covers and long drum solos and stuff, opening for other bands and things. But we never thought sort of beyond that. Once we got what we wanted, we were like, ‘Well, now what do we do?’ And so we had to make more albums.”

Following the commercial success of Dreamboat Annie (which has to date sold 1 million copies in the U.S.), Heart parted company with Mushroom, resulting in a legal battle that would be eventually settled through the release of their second album,1977’s Magazine. By then, Heart signed with Portrait and recorded a string of hit albums including Little Queen, Dog and Butterfly and Bebe Le Strange. Following a commercial dry spell in the early 1980s, they later returned to the charts with the blockbuster albums Heart and Bad Animals and hit singles such as “What About Love,” “These Dreams” and “Alone.”

“It was a roller coaster because as styles change like every five years or so, it’s kind of a lifespan,” says Wilson. “It’s a stylistic switcheroo in the culture. You’re cool, then you’re not cool. And then you’re cool again, and then you’re not cool. So we just had to roll the roller coaster right on through. I think right now we’re cool again. It’s cool when people respond like that.”

After working on their individual solo projects, the Wilson sisters reunited as Heart in 2023 and has since toured. Naturally, “Crazy On You” and “Magic Man” from Dreamboat Annie are among the many classic Heart songs in their setlist.

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA – MAY 08: (L-R) Nancy Wilson and Ann Wilson of Heart perform onstage during the GRAMMY Hall of Fame Gala 2026 at The Beverly Hilton on May 08, 2026 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for The Recording Academy)

Getty Images for The Recording Academy

“It’s cool to be able to still play those songs today because they have substance,” Wilson says. “There’s poetic substance going on. It’s not just like wallpaper, atmosphere, mechanical, automated sounding. It’s real human. That’s the stuff that kind of withstands the test of time, is the songs. Like “Magic Man” is not just Ann’s story, but it’s a lot of every girl’s leaving-home story for better or probably worse. It’s kind of pretty universal girl story.”

Currently, the Wilsons are working on a new record and a documentary in addition to touring. Asked if Dreamboat Annie is the quintessential Heart album of all their studio albums, Wilson says it’s right up there with two other classic band records.

“I think the definitive Heart album is more like Dog and Butterfly. Little Queen maybe, because “Barracuda” is kind of definitive. Even young people that never heard of Heart before, if you say “Barracuda,” they know that. It’s like, ‘Oh, the “Barracuda” band. Okay, I get it.’ It’s been in a lot of movies and stuff.

“But the Little Queen album has all of the mandolin and the kind of the ren fair stuff that Heart can do. That’s more almost like a Zeppelin album. There’s the acoustic Tolkien-esque stuff over here, and then there’s the real hard rock like “Barracuda” over here. So between Little Queen and Dog and Butterfly and Dreamboat, you’ve got the definitive story of Heart.”

LOS ANGELES – SEPTEMBER 1976: Sisters and musicians Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson of the rock band “Heart”…

[32
170496,64,63,447,134,5232,401090,147787,10160
post-827686","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-celebrities","tag-ann-wilson","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-celebrities","tag-entertainment","tag-heart","tag-mushroom-records","tag-nancy-wilson","tag-rock-music
["GET
