Wakefield Trinity fans have praised Tyson Smoothy for his impact at the club after the Perth Bears confirmed the former Broncos premiership winner would join them next NRL season. This will see Smoothy link-up with former Brisbane Broncos teammate Gehamat Shibasaki after his signing with the Bears was announced.

Smoothy was part of the 2025 premiership winning team that went on an incredible run to win the title in a dramatic grand final against the Melbourne Storm. Michael Maguire valued Smoothy who was a versatile forward who came off the bench at No.9.

The 27-year-old made the move to the Super League this season and has played a starring role for Wakefield. Although Wakefield coach Daryl Powell told fans the other week Smoothy would be moving back to Australia at the end of the season.

And the Bears confirmed Smoothy would be heading to Perth in 2027. “I’m looking forward to working with Tyson when he returns home,” Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga said in a statement.

“Our squad is starting to take shape and with the addition of Gehamat and Tyson, we now have four players in our squad who have tasted Premiership success over the last two seasons.”

Wakefield fans were particularly sad to see Smoothy go with the dummy-half helping Trinity reach second on the ladder. Smoothy has been a great addition to Wakefield’s Super League quest and brought with him experience as a premiership-winner.

Gehamat Shibasaki joins the Perth Bears

Shibasaki has been involved in an extended contract negotiation with the Broncos, but reports emerged recently that the player and club were miles apart in terms of what he should be paid.

Brisbane wanted to keep Shibasaki, but were reportedly only able to offer him around $300,000 per season considering the club was facing salary cap pressure.

The Bears jumped and offered Shibasaki up to $500,000 a season on a two-year deal. The Bears become the NRL’s 18th team in 2027 and their roster is taking shape. Shibasaki only cemented his place in the Broncos side last year having taken up a train and trial deal, but also earned selection for Queensland in State of Origin.

Smoothy and Shibasaki will now reunite at the Bears next season. “It’s an honour to have the opportunity to play for the Perth Bears in their first season,” Shibasaki said. “I believe in Mal’s vision for the club and I’m excited about the opportunity to play for him and the club next year.”
