The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) described it as the most intense weather system to hit the region <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-01\/wa-storm-leaves-thousands-without-power-in-wild-weather\/106742688\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in almost 50 years<\/a>. Although severe storms can be devastating, they\u2019re also important for delivering rain in a part of Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wa.gov.au\/service\/natural-resources\/water-resources\/rebalancing-our-groundwater\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that is drying out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the planet continues to warm, climate patterns that were stable for decades are beginning to shift. This changes the extreme weather events we experience from day to day.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term historical records help us make sense of recent trends. They give us a rare chance to see how weather extremes have changed since pre-industrial times.<\/p>\n<p>In meteorology, atmospheric pressure measures the weight of the air around us, with sudden drops indicating stormy conditions. Our new study, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00382-026-08187-z\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Climate Dynamics<\/a>, has reconstructed the longest record of pressure readings taken multiple times a day in the Southern Hemisphere, tracking severe storms in Perth from 1830. <\/p>\n<p>Historically, data from this region has been sparse. Our results are a vital contribution to the World Meteorological Organization\u2019s global network of <a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/activities\/centennial-observing-stations\/centennial-observing-stations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-term monitoring stations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By consolidating nearly 200 years of daily pressure, temperature and rainfall observations from Perth, our research reveals new details about the behaviour of severe storms, and broader weather trends across Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Reconstructing weather extremes from Australia\u2019s past<\/p>\n<p>How did Australia\u2019s climate fluctuate before the large-scale burning of fossil fuels? To find out, we needed to look at historical weather observations recorded during the pre-industrial period.<\/p>\n<p>Data used by the BoM to study long-term weather and climate typically begin in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">early 1900s<\/a>. But older weather records do exist in state and national archives \u2013 we just need to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/community.wmo.int\/site\/knowledge-hub\/programmes-and-initiatives\/hydrology-and-water-resources\/data-rescue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rescue<\/a>\u201d them. This means digitising fragile journals and transcribing historical observations for weather and climate research.<\/p>\n<p>There have been past weather data rescue efforts in Australia, but these mostly focused on temperature and rainfall. Pre-1955 barometer readings \u2013 measurements of atmospheric pressure \u2013 for most Australian capital cities are only available in the BoM\u2019s original handwritten meteorological registers. <\/p>\n<p>By recovering these historical observations, we mapped the large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns that drive extreme weather \u2013 from low-pressure storm systems to high-pressure heatwaves. This work provides the \u201cmissing link\u201d between the BoM\u2019s pressure observations available for the city from 1942, and our team\u2019s previous data rescue efforts, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/climatehistory.com.au\/2021\/07\/01\/perth-record-complete\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">citizen science project<\/a> to transcribe 19th century materials. <\/p>\n<p>What did the records show?<\/p>\n<p>We consolidated 196 years of weather data from four historical sites:<\/p>\n<p>This work builds on our previous analysis of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/we-dug-up-australian-weather-records-back-to-1838-and-found-snow-is-falling-less-often-139300\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">daily temperature extremes in Adelaide<\/a>, allowing us to evaluate long-term changes in severe storms in another important area of southern Australia.<\/p>\n<p>We identified <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5281\/zenodo.17103389\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">141 severe storms<\/a> that impacted Perth between 1830 and 2024. We cross-checked these against historical material, including newspaper articles.<\/p>\n<p>For example, on June 17 1927, a \u201cterrific wind and rain storm\u201d impacted Perth with a record wind speed of 128km per hour, causing extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. It was reported as a storm of \u201ccyclonic strength\u201d, which wasn\u2019t just media exaggeration \u2013 such high wind speeds are classified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/resources\/learn-and-explore\/tropical-cyclone-knowledge-centre\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">category 2 tropical cyclone<\/a> today. <\/p>\n<p>            <a role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Zoomable image\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/739260\/original\/file-20260601-57-zelkcf.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.1&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/file-20260601-57-zelkcf.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              Front page of The Sunday Times newspaper reporting on the severe winter storm struck Perth on June 17 1927.<br \/>\n              <a class=\"source\" href=\"http:\/\/nla.gov.au\/nla.news-page4346860\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Library of Australia<\/a>, <a class=\"license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why are winter storms declining?<\/p>\n<p>The decline in Perth\u2019s winter storms since 1970 is linked to changes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/Hadley-cell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hadley cell<\/a> \u2013 a major atmospheric circulation pattern that influences the Earth\u2019s climate.<\/p>\n<p>This large-scale pattern is responsible for moving heat from the equator toward the poles, creating wet rainforests at the equator and dry desert zones in the subtropics. <\/p>\n<p>As increasing greenhouse gases and ozone depletion heat the atmosphere, the Hadley cell is expanding. In Australia, this is pushing the subtropical high-pressure desert belt poleward. In turn, this weakens the rain-bearing westerly winds and the storm fronts that usually travel across our southern coastline, reducing rainfall across the southern mainland. <\/p>\n<p>Since the 1970s, this process has triggered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/chapter\/chapter-8\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drying of subtropical regions around the world<\/a>, including southern Australia, southern Africa, and the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>Southwestern Australia is recognised as a global climate change hotspot, having experienced a dramatic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/weather-and-climate\/past-weather-and-climate\/state-of-the-climate-2024\/report-at-a-glance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20% decrease in winter rainfall since 1970<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Until now, studies tracking the pathway of past storms were confined to the mid-20th century onward, when modern datasets begin. Most studies have also focused on the Northern Hemisphere where long-term pressure records are more common.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back to look forward<\/p>\n<p>Our extended analysis shows the modern decline in storms hitting Perth is unusually persistent. Grey shading denotes some data was missing in the corresponding decade.<br \/>\n              <a class=\"license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our analysis also identified a long dry period between 1830 and 1846 that was actually drier than our current rainfall deficit.<\/p>\n<p>While the modern decline is more relentless, this historical dry spell suggests that modern weather observations don\u2019t capture the full range of natural variability and extremes. <\/p>\n<p>This means future climate risk is likely being underestimated in Perth, and across Australia in general.<\/p>\n<p>Historical observations are our best way of filling crucial gaps in Australia\u2019s climate records, allowing us to sharpen our forecasts of future weather extremes in a warmer world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On the first day of winter, southwest Western Australia was pummelled by a damaging storm.
