{"id":828501,"date":"2026-07-28T06:22:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T06:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/828501\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T06:22:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T06:22:10","slug":"25-of-australias-land-now-has-protected-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/828501\/","title":{"rendered":"25% of Australia\u2019s land now has protected status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"335\" width=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/iStock-2164142382_625x442.jpg\" alt=\"Sand dunes in the Simpson Desert\" class=\"wp-image-47123\"  \/>Image credit: \u00a9iStock.com\/Mandy McKeesick<\/p>\n<p>The declaration of the new Simpson Desert Indigenous Protected Area has added more than 4.7m hectares to the National Reserve System.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The addition of the new Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) means that 196 million hectares \u2014 an area larger than Queensland \u2014 of Australia\u2019s landmass is now protected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The federal government has a target to ensure that 30% of Australia\u2019s land is protected by 2030, under the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spatialsource.com.au\/maps-show-progress-on-national-30-x-30-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">30 by 30 plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re continuing to work towards hitting the 30 per cent target, with our commitment to create and expand even more Indigenous Protected Areas through the $250 million Australian Bushland program,\u201d said the federal Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Situated in the Located in the south-eastern corner of the Northern Territory, the Simpson Desert IPA is home to ecosystems such as sand dunes, stone plains and wetlands, which form important habitats for species such as the greater bilby, central rock-rat, night parrot and princess parrot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those animals are priority species identified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcceew.gov.au\/environment\/biodiversity\/threatened\/action-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Threatened Species Action Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Simpson Desert IPA, sacred sites and special species<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Simpson Desert IPA will be managed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clc.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Central Land Council<\/a> (CLC) in partnership with Traditional Owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the local indigenous language, the IPA is known as the Pmere Atherre Antenterreme [Ap-ME-ra A-THA-rra A-NDAN-de-rre-ma] Indigenous Protected Area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe name of the new IPA means \u2018working together to look after two areas of country\u2019 and refers to two language and cultural groups,\u201d said CLC chief executive, Les Turner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aboriginal landowners gathered at the Uluperte homeland, around four hours\u2019 drive from Alice Springs, to celebrate and formalise the agreement between the CLC and the federal government.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"335\" width=\"503\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/quarter-australia-protected-news-tile_600.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people signing documents on a desk set up in the Simpson Desert\" class=\"wp-image-47124\"  \/>At the official dedication ceremony for the Pmere Atherre Antenterreme Simpson Desert IPA. Credit: DCCEEW<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deal funds them to protect their sacred sites and around 900 animal and plant species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree of our ranger groups will work with the traditional owners to look after the 21 threatened animal species found on the IPA,\u201d Mr Turner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as the species listed above, the area is also home to the crest-tailed mulgara, night parrot, dusky hopping mouse, plains mouse, princess parrot, grey falcon and eyrean grasswren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The area is also home to three threatened plants: birds nest wattle, sea heath and acacia peuce.<\/p>\n<p>Managing and protecting the land<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the CLC, IPAs are established under agreements between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups and the Australian Government to manage and protect areas of land and sea for biodiversity conservation.
