McNally died on July 22 after a long illness. The FIA paid tribute to a figure who worked closely with former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and \u201cplayed a significant role in the commercial growth\u201d of the sport.<\/p>\n
Although rarely prominent before the public, McNally helped turn Formula 1 from a collection of independently promoted races into a consistent global product for sponsors and corporate guests.<\/p>\n
His involvement in motor racing began as a competitor. McNally raced sports cars during the 1960s before establishing himself as a journalist with Autosport. As the magazine\u2019s Grand Prix reporter, he travelled with the championship and developed the paddock relationships and insider knowledge that would underpin his later business career.<\/p>\n
McNally\u2019s contemporary reports captured an unusually intimate era of Formula 1. He chronicled Richard Attwood\u2019s pursuit of Graham Hill at Monaco in 1968, identified Ronnie Peterson as the outstanding performer at the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix and wrote candidly about the uncompromising conduct of drivers such as Clay Regazzoni.<\/p>\n
After leaving frontline journalism, McNally moved into sponsorship consultancy with Marlboro. He also helped manage James Hunt, with whom he had a close friendship, and became increasingly involved with Ecclestone\u2019s efforts to reorganise Formula 1 commercially.<\/p>\n
McNally\u2019s most influential work came through his Geneva-based Allsport Management company. At a time when individual circuits sold advertising space independently, he consolidated trackside signage into packages that could be offered across the championship. Advertising boards were positioned and presented to maximise their exposure to Formula 1\u2019s expanding television audience, making them part of a coherent worldwide product rather than a series of local transactions.<\/p>\n
He subsequently founded the Formula 1 Paddock Club in 1984. Its early events struggled to meet ambitious sales targets, but McNally persisted in the belief that Grands Prix should provide corporations with hospitality comparable to the world\u2019s most prestigious sporting events.<\/p>\n
The concept eventually became an important part of Formula 1\u2019s business model, combining premium viewing, dining and controlled paddock access for sponsors and their guests. It also helped reposition the championship as a meeting place for international business and entertainment.<\/p>\n
McNally sold Allsport to Formula 1 owner CVC Capital Partners in 2006 in a deal reported to be worth more than \u00a3250 million. He remained in charge of the operation until retiring in 2011.<\/p>\n
Away from business, McNally was remembered within motor racing as a generous, sharp-witted and entertaining paddock character. He maintained a deliberately discreet public profile despite his wealth and influence.<\/p>\n
McNally is survived by his son Rollo. His other son, Sean, died earlier in 2026.<\/p>\n
Drivers and team owners supplied Formula 1\u2019s visible drama, but McNally helped construct the commercial environment surrounding it.
