With Buccaneers veterans reporting on Wednesday, July 29, the clock is ticking. Loudly.<\/p>\n<p>The Bucs reportedly are <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nfl\/profootballtalk\/rumor-mill\/news\/with-camp-looming-buccaneers-will-dive-in-on-baker-mayfield-negotiations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">trying to get something done<\/a>. Of course, they tried to extend defensive tackle Vita Vea\u2019s deal; that has resulted in Vea <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nfl\/profootballtalk\/rumor-mill\/news\/bucs-dt-vita-vea-requests-trade-after-failed-attempts-at-contract-extension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">requesting a trade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mayfield\u2019s play apparently would be to finish the final year of his three-year, $100 million deal and see what happens next.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that Mayfield <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JFowlerESPN\/status\/2081483283666203081?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">would be willing to play<\/a> under the franchise tag in 2027, at a one-year tender of $47.97 million. The question is whether the Bucs would use it. <\/p>\n<p>The challenge continues to be putting the right new-money value of an extension. The ultimate question, in our view, is whether it starts with a 4 or a 5.<\/p>\n<p>However it plays out, Mayfield has shown a willingness to bet on himself, at all times.
