{"id":829393,"date":"2026-07-28T16:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T16:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/829393\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T16:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T16:22:14","slug":"car-crashes-nine-out-of-australias-top-10-crash-hotspots-are-in-the-same-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/829393\/","title":{"rendered":"Car crashes: Nine out of Australia\u2019s top 10 crash hotspots are in the same city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New data suggests drivers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/melbourne-ch7\" class=\"sc-eRZcwA dNXoqI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Melbourne<\/a> are the most prone to getting into a collision, finding nine out of 10 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/australia-news\" class=\"sc-eRZcwA dNXoqI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia\u2019s<\/a> crash hotspots are in the city. <\/p>\n<p>The 2026 AAMI Crash Index revealed that Springvale Road in Glen Waverley was the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/crash-25gf\" class=\"sc-eRZcwA dNXoqI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worst spot for crashes<\/a>, taking the crown from Plenty Road in Bundoora, which held the unwanted top spot for eight straight years. <\/p>\n<p>AAMI spokesperson Mary Kennedy said most insurance claims weren\u2019t high-speed collisions but rather fender benders, failure to give way, and crashing into stationary objects \u2013 all mostly preventable incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNine of Australia\u2019s top 10 crash hotspots are in Melbourne, which tells us this is not about one bad road. It is a broader pattern across some of our busiest arterial roads,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The only non-Melbourne road to make the list was Pennant Hills Road in Carlingford in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/sydney-fp5\" class=\"sc-eRZcwA dNXoqI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney\u2019s north-west<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The index analyses more than 394,000 motor insurance claims lodged across Australia in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The nation\u2019s worst crash spots share similarities, including busy arterial roads, traffic lights, major intersections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/shopping\" class=\"sc-eRZcwA dNXoqI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shopping precincts<\/a>, car parks and heavy stop-start traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The data also found most crashes were caused by poor driving habits such as tailgating, late braking, misjudging turns and failing to anticipate changing traffic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Male motorists and drivers aged 65 and older were involved in the most crashes, and white, grey, and silver vehicles accounted for the highest number of prangs.<\/p>\n<p>Friday was also found to be the worst day of the week for collisions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A rental car driven by an elderly male Australian tourist rear ended another vehicle on Frankton Road, Queenstown, which runs next to Lake Wakatipu.
