Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman has sparked strong reactions after publicly supporting new head coach Mike Babcock. The veteran winger defended Babcock despite the coach’s controversial reputation and past allegations during previous NHL stops.

“I had a very good experience with Mike in Toronto,” Hyman said, per Sportsnet. “I think he’s a phenomenal coach. I think extremely highly of him.”

The Oilers hired Babcock on June 23 after the NHL completed a review into his past conduct. The league found no basis to prevent his return, although the NHLPA previously described his past actions as “very concerning.”

Hyman’s comments circulated on X, where many fans disagreed with his stance.

One fan wrote, “Hyman might be the most unlikable player in the league so this makes sense.”

Another fan posted, “Zach, blink twice if you need help,” suggesting Hyman is speaking under pressure. While intended as a joke, it reflected the skepticism surrounding Babcock’s return behind an NHL bench.

A fan reacted, saying, “Of course you played on the 1st line with Matthews. Ask the 4th liners or ask Spezza or Corrado.”

One fan said, “Again? Family and business connections. Not qualified to speak on how Babcock treats guys he can get away with bullying.”

A fan mentioned, “Babcock will throw Hymen under the bus by Christmas.”

Edmonton enters the new season under significant pressure. The team finished 41-30-11 before losing in the first round to Anaheim. Connor McDavid still led the NHL with 138 points, yet defensive breakdowns and inconsistent goaltending ended another Stanley Cup bid.

Oilers betting experience outweighs controversy

Edmonton’s management is reportedly thinking Babcock’s track record can help maximize its championship window. Team leaders reportedly met with Babcock before the hiring and supported the decision.

Hyman’s endorsement also carries weight because he played under Babcock in Toronto. His positive experience contrasts with criticism from former players who accused the coach of absurd coaching tactics.

Winning often changes public opinion in professional sports. However, Babcock faces immediate scrutiny because of his history. So, every interaction with players will receive added attention throughout the season.

The Oilers clearly prioritized experience over public perception. Whether that gamble succeeds will depend less on offseason debate and more on results.

If Edmonton returns to Stanley Cup contention, support for the hiring will grow. Another disappointing season, however, will likely bring renewed criticism of both Babcock and those who publicly backed him.
