For the Fremantle Dockers, it’s a do-or-die scenario and a watershed moment that could define the club for years to come.

Facing the Western Bulldogs, both teams are under enormous pressure. Bulldogs fans are nervous but confident, though. They are the favourites; their team is playing on their home ground; and they have some incredible players that go by the handles Bont, Stilts, Chilli, Baldi and Astro Naught (Now that is a collection of nicknames you surely don’t want to lose to).

Freo fans, meantime, are running out of patience with a team that has flirted with greatness for so long and yet remains without a premiership in 30 years.

Many have written the Dockers off, even before the bounce. Calls for the coach’s head have also been thrown about, as if the fate of 2025 can be decided in the media rather than on the field. And yet Freo sit in that strange and cruel position of having won 15 games but without a spot in the finals. It’s actually pretty unfair.

In past years, a 15-win season could have delivered a top-four finish and a double chance. This year, history has again been conspiring against the boys from the port. And it’s a double-edged sword. The Dockers have a curious pattern: five times now, when they’ve needed a win in a last round game to make the finals, they’ve fallen short.

You could argue that surely this is the year they smash that hoodoo or you could mutter darkly about stage fright under the bright lights.

Either way, Sunday’s contest is far from just another game. It’s a narrative-laden, emotionally charged battle that will test the mental toughness of the team and the loyalty of the supporters.

And the preparation is not without its challenges. Luke Jackson, Fremantle’s “unicorn”, is carrying personal pain. Understandably, he’s been in Melbourne all week, unable to train with the team until they arrive for the game.

Hayden Young could be back from injury, but Justin Longmuir and his staff face a dilemma: can you really manage someone’s minutes in what’s effectively a sudden-death clash?

And then there’s Nat Fyfe, the champion and now-retiree, who started as the sub in last Friday’s loss to Brisbane. Fyfe’s farewell, meant to inspire and galvanise, obviously didn’t have that effect: a disappointing performance, a home send-off where some fans left early due to how cold it was, opting to get transport home, complicated by a team that didn’t rise to the occasion.

Everything points to Sunday as a defining moment. This is the game that can affirm the Dockers’ progress towards their strategic plan: one men’s and one women’s premiership by 2025.

There’s no more room for excuses. No ifs or buts or near-misses. Fremantle’s fans deserve more than another so-close-and-yet-so-far story.

Across town, of course, there is even less to be excited about. The West Coast Eagles aren’t even in the conversation. A club with four premierships since 1987, and yet the past four years have been horrible.

Don Pyke, as CEO, deserves support, as do former champions who remain connected to the club. Their role now isn’t just nostalgia or criticism; it’s providing solutions, helping to chart a path forward.

But what if the solution for both clubs could come through collaboration?

What if, for the first time, the Dockers and Eagles could find common ground — a strategic alliance of sorts — to take on the clubs from the east?

The rivalry between the two WA clubs runs deep, but perhaps they should work together, sharing knowledge, co-ordinating resources and forming a coalition of the willing. Think Henry Kissinger-level diplomacy, applied to AFL footy: negotiation, fairness, openness and regular communication.

It might sound idealistic, but the antidote to animosity is surprisingly simple. In life, hatred and suspicion often fester because people avoid contact. We generalise wildly about people we don’t really know. The same applies to footy clubs and players, and even fans. More contact, meetings, joint sessions, and open dialogue could build a stronger relationship and, ultimately, a stronger WA football presence nationally.

I know it sounds like a Barra pipe dream but doesn’t every great idea start out like some sort of crazy suggestion?

But back to Sunday and it’s importance. This one isn’t just a game. It’s a test of Fremantle’s courage, resilience and ability to seize the moment. It’s a chance to finally exorcise the demons of “so near, yet so far” and give their supporters a glimpse of the bright future they’ve been promised. It’s also a reminder that football isn’t just about wins and losses but about connection, strategy, and vision for a team, a club, and a state.

The Dockers must win. Their fans deserve it. And if they can finally break the cycle of finals heartbreak, perhaps a new era of WA football collaboration could emerge, one built on shared ambition.

Yes, if we one day have a derby Grand Final then maybe the gloves come off for a while, but otherwise, what have we got to lose?

Sunday at Marvel isn’t just another match. It’s a make-or-break moment. And for Fremantle, these are the moments that define a club — and a player’s — career.

Sunday at Marvel Stadium isn’t just another round of AFL footy.
