Stargazers across Australia are in for a treat, with July\u2019s full \u201cBuck Moon\u201d set to light up the night sky<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While peak illumination technically occurs just after midnight on Thursday, the moon will appear full to the naked eye from Wednesday.<\/p>\n

In NSW<\/a>, Victoria<\/a>, ACT<\/a>, and Tasmania<\/a>, the best viewing starts from around 4.45pm AEST on Wednesday, as the moon rises in the east.<\/p>\n

Astrophysicist at Swinburne University of Technology Dr Rebecca Davies said this month\u2019s spectacle will be notably high in the sky.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe July \u2018Buck Moon\u2019 will pass the second highest in the sky of any full moon this year, after the June \u2018Strawberry Moon\u2019,\u201d she told nine.com.au.<\/p>\n

Davies said you won\u2019t need any special equipment to get a good look.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe moon always looks most spectacular when it\u2019s close to the horizon. Fortunately, moonrise and sunset are very close together at the moment, as is typical during a full moon when the moon is opposite the Sun in the sky.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo find somewhere with a good view of the eastern horizon,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Provided skies remain clear, heading away from bright city lights will give you the best view.<\/p>\n

The July full moon is traditionally called the Buck Moon as, in North America, it appears at the time of year when young male deer \u2013 known as bucks \u2013 begin growing new antlers.<\/p>\n

Although the seasons are different in Australia, the name is still used around the world.<\/p>\n
