DETROIT \u2013 People will soon be able to walk or bike between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, using the Gordie Howe International Bridge.<\/p>\n
Beginning Aug. 5, the bridge\u2019s multi-use path will open to pedestrians and cyclists. It will be the only border crossing between Michigan and Canada where people can legally cross on foot or by bicycle. There is no toll for pedestrians or cyclists.<\/p>\n
The 1.5-mile path is separated from vehicle traffic by concrete barriers. Travelers will pass through dedicated customs facilities before entering the bridge.<\/p>\n
Detroit cyclist Vincent Dockett said he\u2019s looking forward to the experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo ride across the water, that\u2019s a win in itself. And then to ride into another country and back, that\u2019s a double win,\u201d Dockett said.<\/p>\n
Todd Scott, executive director of the Detroit Greenways Coalition, said the organization has advocated for a pedestrian and bicycle connection across the Detroit River for nearly two decades.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are really no connections right now between Detroit and Windsor for people walking and biking,\u201d Scott said. \u201cThere are great trails on both sides of the river.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the Detroit side, the path connects to the Joe Louis Greenway, expanding access to Detroit\u2019s growing network of trails.<\/p>\n
Although pedestrians and cyclists won\u2019t pay a toll, they must still present approved travel documents to cross the international border. Travelers will need a valid passport, enhanced driver\u2019s license or NEXUS card.<\/p>\n
Scott said the bridge could draw cyclists from across North America.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we don\u2019t know yet the impact this is going to have on cycling and attracting people from around the world to come here and visit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
To mark the opening, the Detroit Greenways Coalition created a bike tour that begins and ends at the Gordie Howe International Bridge. The route includes Southwest Detroit, Michigan Central, downtown Detroit, Eastern Market, the Dequindre Cut, Belle Isle and the Detroit RiverWalk.<\/p>\n
