Justin Langer<\/a> has indicated a potential interest in the vacant England<\/a> Test coach position, despite insisting he has not yet been approached for the role. <\/p>\n

The former Australia<\/a> coach, who is currently at the helm of the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred, has quickly become a leading candidate to succeed Brendon McCullum<\/a>, who was dismissed earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Langer addressed the swirling speculation directly. <\/p>\n

“I haven\u2019t heard from anyone. It\u2019s all paper talk,” he stated, before acknowledging the prestige of the role. “There\u2019s three (big) coaching roles in the world \u2013 the Australian head coach, the Indian head coach and the England head coach. But it\u2019s all hypothetical, isn\u2019t it? I\u2019m passionate about the game of cricket but mainly about Test cricket.” <\/p>\n

His comments come after Andy Flower, an early favourite, ruled himself out of contention.<\/p>\n

Having played over 100 Test matches for Australia and coached the national side for four years, Langer was pressed on the prospect of coaching England, with the 2027 Ashes<\/a> just around the corner.<\/p>\n

The 55-year-old reflected on the evolving landscape of the sport: “I think, with world cricket, it\u2019s so global. It\u2019s so different. I\u2019d never have dreamed I\u2019d be coaching franchise cricket. I never dreamed I\u2019d coach Australia. When it comes to coaching, it\u2019s a career and everyone looks at all opportunities, don\u2019t they?”<\/p>\n

The new Test coach would need to collaborate with McCullum, who retains his position with England\u2019s limited-overs teams. Langer believes such a partnership could be effective “if you\u2019ve got the right people\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThey\u2019ve got to get on very well and they\u2019ve got to be on the same page. I actually feel for Baz McCullum. It is a really, really tough job.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Australia coach Andrew McDonald has suggested that a dramatic return for Ben Stokes<\/a> in next year\u2019s Ashes series would not surprise him. Stokes retired from international cricket during the third Test against New Zealand last month but continues to play for Durham.<\/p>\n

McDonald told SEN radio: “I think the fairy-tale would be that he comes back out of retirement and takes on one more Ashes and builds a lot of hype on the way in. If you\u2019re looking at promoting that series, that\u2019s probably the angle that you would want. To me, he\u2019s still got a lot of good cricket left in him. It\u2019ll be a fascinating watch. I think that whoever the new head coach that comes in potentially has a conversation with him.”<\/p>\n

Langer also weighed in on the possibility of Stokes reversing his decision. <\/p>\n

“Only he can answer that. What I honestly believe is that, when you know your time\u2019s up, your time\u2019s up,” he said. “He\u2019s so fit. Physically he can, mentally he can, but only in his heart if he wants to. When it comes to the Ashes, from an Australian point of view, I hope he doesn\u2019t. He\u2019s a warrior.
