{"id":832125,"date":"2026-07-29T22:09:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T22:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/832125\/"},"modified":"2026-07-29T22:09:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T22:09:24","slug":"family-forced-to-move-interstate-due-to-lack-of-mental-health-care-in-was-south-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/832125\/","title":{"rendered":"Family forced to move interstate due to lack of mental health care in WA&#8217;s South West"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A West Australian mother says she was forced to move interstate to get adequate mental health care for her daughter after she was failed by the state&#8217;s health system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Simone Meyer spent <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-25\/teen-spends-60-hours-in-perth-ed-without-mental-health-care\/105692884\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105692884\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">60 hours across emergency departments<\/a> in two Perth hospitals with her daughter Indi in November last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 16-year-old needed care for complex mental health issues, including autism, OCD and depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Margaret River mother said the family could not access adequate support services locally, so were forced to make the 270 kilometre trip to Perth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The local support services that we were referred to, we didn&#8217;t think, get or feel like we received good enough care,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It just felt like [they] got you in, risk managed you, once you were sort of classed as non-risk, off you went again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Struggles in Perth<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Indi waited outside the emergency departments at Fiona Stanley and Joondalup hospitals for hours in the cold, as she could not cope with the loud noises in ED.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two women pose for a photo in an orchid of pink flowers\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/777307bcaf19cd523d2f9b0e47b7290c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Simone with her 16-year-old daughter Indi. (ABC News: Pip Waller)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There is so much more support over here, there&#8217;s just there&#8217;s so many to choose from,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Luckily we haven&#8217;t needed the hospital because the support services outside have been so good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>New mental health beds, crisis team<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The family&#8217;s story reflects the pressure on WA&#8217;s mental health system, particularly in communities outside Perth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state government apologised last month after a 17-year-old Busselton girl <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-03\/teen-waits-5-days-in-hospital-emergency-for-mental-health-bed\/106753930\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106753930\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was forced to wait five days<\/a> in Busselton Hospital&#8217;s emergency department for an acute mental health bed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On Wednesday, Health Minister Meredith Hammat announced a number of fast-tracked improvements to the region&#8217;s mental health services, including a new &#8220;observation area&#8221; with six 72-hour mental health beds at Bunbury Regional Hospital.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A hospital building site\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2114739671b13a370a1ef5ec51a4ffb6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Bunbury Hospital is undergoing a multi-million-dollar redevelopment.
