(ABC News: Mitchell Woolnough)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Leggo&#8217;s owner Simplot declined an interview with the ABC but, in a statement, said it rejected the test results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Simplot maintains comprehensive traceability, supplier verification and audit processes across its supply chain,&#8221; a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We work closely with our suppliers through quality assurance, sourcing verification and compliance programs to ensure our products meet our quality, sourcing and regulatory requirements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company said it had supply chain documentation tracing the failed products back to Australian farms where the tomatoes were grown. (Four Corners: Jack Fisher)<\/p>\n<p>Modern slavery concerns<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As part of the Four Corners investigation, forensic laboratory Source Certain tested more than 900 samples of 221 tomato products from 39 brands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Its analysis showed that about half the products that contained tomatoes from China were traced to Xinjiang, where forced Uyghur labour is known to be used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Of the failed Leggo&#8217;s products, two-thirds were linked to Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Although the testing could not determine whether forced labour was involved, Nationals Leader Matt Canavan described the results as &#8220;greatly concerning&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last week the Trump administration imposed a 12.5 per cent tariff on Australian goods, citing Australia&#8217;s failure to effectively ban forced-labour imports.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-27\/food-fraud-investigation-reveals-truth-behind-labels\/106960116\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Food fraud investigation<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A Four Corners investigation has uncovered products whose labels did not match independent scientific testing, raising serious questions about the integrity of Australia&#8217;s food supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Canavan said although the tariffs were &#8220;unjustified&#8221;, that should not stop the federal government from acting on modern slavery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It is very important that the government doesn&#8217;t just say that we have world-leading legislation against slavery \u2014 we actually follow it up and enforce it,&#8221; Mr Canavan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These sorts of allegations need to be taken seriously, they need to be followed up, and we just can&#8217;t have any truck with products or supply chains that involve slave labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They should not be welcome in our country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A tin labelled &quot;Coles Italian Tomato Paste&quot;.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785371113_780_32c6f621e4c537b52df74217b28c3145.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Testing conducted for Four Corners indicated that Coles Italian tomato paste contained tomatoes grown in China.
