{"id":832476,"date":"2026-07-30T02:07:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T02:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/832476\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T02:07:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T02:07:11","slug":"deadly-h5n1-bird-flu-strain-detected-in-victoria-for-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/832476\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly H5N1 bird flu strain detected in Victoria for first time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The deadly H5N1 bird flu strain has reached Victoria after a positive test in a bird was detected in the state&#8217;s south-west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Agriculture Victoria has confirmed the virus was detected in a greater crested tern found near Portland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Victoria&#8217;s Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Graeme Cooke said further genetic testing was being conducted to formally confirm the result at the CSIRO&#8217;s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness at Geelong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Following weeks of enhanced readiness, we have now enacted Victoria&#8217;s State Emergency Animal Disease Response Plan,&#8221; Dr Cooke said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Based on international experience, this H5 variant differs from previous strains and has been known to cause large numbers of deaths in wild birds and some mammals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our plans aim to limit impacts where possible, particularly on our most threatened species, while also supporting our farmers and reducing risk to domestic and commercial poultry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This week, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-29\/h5-bird-flu-strain-very-likely-spreading-locally-in-sa\/106970486\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106970486\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local transmission of H5 bird flu occurred for the first time<\/a> between a number of greater crested terns in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A brown bird with white flecks and a black beak looks to the left of the frame with\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785377229_109_4c90a48edf20be73be368db8ee3f715d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Avian influenza was first detected in Australian in a brown skua.
