The Australian women’s team pursuit squad rode their way into the gold medal match against New Zealand as the cycling gets underway in the velodrome on day seven of the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

However, the men’s team sprint won’t face former teammate Matthew Richardson, who controversially defected to England, after he was ruled out by injury.<\/p>\n

On the track, Jess Hull will start her campaign in the mile heats alongside Abbey Caldwell and Claudia Hollingsworth.<\/p>\n

Athletics: Australia pushing up the ranks in javelin qualifers\"Gemma<\/p>\n

The men’s javelin qualifiers are playing out now in\u00a0Scotstoun Stadium, and Aussie\u00a0Cameron McEntyre has just attempted his second attempt.<\/p>\n

McEntyre made some slight adjustments after learning from his\u00a0first throw of\u00a072.43m, achieving a greater distance of\u00a078.91 on the second go!<\/p>\n

He’ll have a crack at the third attempt soon, let’s see if he can push up the ranks a bit further and qualify for tomorrow’s final!<\/p>\n

Bowls: Rednall drops points\"James<\/p>\n

In great news for Ellen Fife after her victory just now, the only woman above her in the section has just lost.<\/p>\n

England\u2019s Katherine Rednall won the first 6-5. But Canadian Kelly McKerihen claimed the second 8-5, forcing a tie break.<\/p>\n

McKerihen was able to win the tiebreak.<\/p>\n

It really opens the group up. Now Fife, McKerihen and Rednall have all won two, lost one.<\/p>\n

It means it could easily come down to shots for\/against.<\/p>\n

Track cycling: First blood to Australia in tandem sprint semi\"Simon\"\"(Getty Images)<\/p>\n

That is very, very good from\u00a0Jess Gallagher and pilot Jacqueline Mengler-Mohr.<\/p>\n

They have beaten England’s Sophie Unwin and her pilot, Anna Whitworth-Hay in the first of their best of three tandem sprint semifinals.<\/p>\n

It was an aggressive match up, with the Aussies forced to close the door hard on England with a lap to go.<\/p>\n

There was something of an upset in the other semi as well, as New Zealand, the fourth-fastest qualifiers, beat England’s other pair.<\/p>\n

Shows that speed isn’t everything in the sprint – you have to be tactically right too – and the Aussies and Kiwis were there, taking the race out from the front.<\/p>\n

Bowls: Dominant win for Fife\"James<\/p>\n

Defending gold medalist Ellen Fife has defeated Abbey Andrieux in two sets 12-5, 8-4 to keep the dream alive in the women’s singles.<\/p>\n

Fife looked impeccable out there. And she took the chance to capitalise and improve her shots for\/against.<\/p>\n

She now sits second in the section behind Katherine Rednall who is currently in action and took the first set against Canadian Kelly McKerihen.<\/p>\n

A reminder of the rules in weightlifting\"Gemma<\/p>\n

The men competing in tonight’s 110kg final at the\u00a0SEC Armadillo will have three attempts each at both lifts.<\/p>\n

They started with the snatch, which involves picking up the barbell with a wide grip and raising it overhead in one fluid motion.<\/p>\n

The blokes have just finished off these attempts, with Barredo ready to take on the clean and jerk next.<\/p>\n

In this lift, each athlete will\u00a0bring the bar to chest height (clean), pause, then drive the weight overhead (jerk) with locked elbows.<\/p>\n

For the clean and jerk attempt to count, the competitor must hold steady until the buzzer sounds.<\/p>\n

The weights increase as the event continues, so athletes will need to be strategic about\u00a0how much they attempt to lift in each stage.<\/p>\n

Track cycling: Australia will face New Zealand for team pursuit gold\"Simon<\/p>\n

New Zealand looked for a moment that they would be able to overhaul the Australian team, then the gap opened up a bit to back over a second, but finally a surging final lap sees the Kiwis finish just 0.2 seconds behind the Aussies.<\/p>\n

Have to say, I am very disappointed in Wales’s efforts there. I expected them to be right in the mix, but they were a very long way off.<\/p>\n

Weightlifting: 162kg snatch proves too much for Australian lifter\"Gemma<\/p>\n

On his third attempt at the snatch, Ridge Barredo managed to get the 162kg weight overhead but came off-balance and dropped the barbell before he could extend into a standing position.<\/p>\n

The weight was 1kg heavier than he achieved at the Commonwealth Games qualifier, back in April.<\/p>\n

England set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch tonight, but Fiji’s Taniela Tuisuva Rainibogi soon overtook it to set the record at 170kg!<\/p>\n

The men’s 110kg weightlifting finalists have finished all of their snatch attempts, now we’re moving onto the clean and jerk.<\/p>\n

Good work from the Aussie quartet,\u00a0Sophie Edwards, Claudia Marcks, Alyssa Polites and Felicity Wilson-Haffenden.<\/p>\n

They have recorded the fastest time so far with just New Zealand left to ride, so will finish in the top two and will compete in the gold medal race later today.<\/p>\n

Marcks led the team off and then dropped out just after the 2km mark.<\/p>\n

Edwards looked like she was really having to dig deep to stay with the pace of the team, but the full-time medical student and national individual pursuit champion<\/a> held on to record a sensational final time.<\/p>\n

Last bowl of the fifth end, with Jersey’s Abbey Andrieux up by one shot, Ellen Fife\u2019s bowl glides around the outside and lightly kisses the jack to steal the end.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just simply TOO GOOD.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s got to crush the spirits of Andrieux, who now needs to score six in two ends to force a tie-break.<\/p>\n

Weightlifting: Wider stance works for Aussie on second attempt\"Gemma<\/p>\n

Ridge Barredo returned to the weightlifting stage with a much stronger second attempt at the snatch.<\/p>\n

Just a little shaky under that 155kg barbell, the Aussie lifter drives it overhead and gets three green lights from the judges!<\/p>\n

Barredo\u00a0will have a go at snatching more than\u00a0160kg snatch next.<\/p>\n

A couple of the men competing in the 110kg weightlifting final\u00a0have already been ruled out tonight, with both\u00a0Vanuatu and Cameroon recording a “did not finish” result after failing their snatch attempts.<\/p>\n

Ellen Fife has claimed the first set 12-5 in the women’s bowls.<\/p>\n

Four times she scored three shots in an end. Her grouping was immaculate. She seemed to just replicate the same bowl over and over and over.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re going to score, score big.<\/p>\n

In contrast,\u00a0Jersey\u2019s Abbey Andrieux struggled to get her line and length right.<\/p>\n

Straight up after this we\u2019ve got Corey Wedlock and Aaron Teys taking on Fiji in the men\u2019s pairs.<\/p>\n

Ellen Fife will front up again for her round four clash against Connie-Leigh Rixon from Malta at 1.25am AEST tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Then we have Aussies Louise Hoskins and Serena Bonnell in the para women\u2019s pairs B6-B8 at 5.40am AEST tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Weightlifting: Australian attempts 155kg\"Gemma<\/p>\n

Aussie weightlifter Ridge Barredo is up now in the men’s 110kg final!<\/p>\n

The Sydney-sider has just attempted his first snatch lift, but couldn’t quite get the bar overhead.<\/p>\n

He’s taking another crack at the 155kg now.<\/p>\n

In a social media post made in Glasgow earlier this week, Barredo said “all the work is done” \u2014 now it’s time to rumble.<\/p>\n

Has he got what it takes? Time will tell!<\/p>\n

Track cycling: Women’s team pursuit qualifying\"Simon<\/p>\n

More time trials here, as we hit the first of the endurance events on the program.<\/p>\n

This is a team race where four riders work together to produce the fastest time over 4,000 metres.<\/p>\n

Riders will take turns at the front to take the wind, and only three riders need to finish to register a time, so you may see one rider do a longer turn on the front and then swing off.<\/p>\n

The best teams will use the camber of the track to swing up off the front and rejoin the back.<\/p>\n

There are five teams in this event.<\/p>\n

The fastest two winning teams race for the gold and silver medals, and the third- and fourth-fastest teams race for the bronze medal.<\/p>\n

Good performance from\u00a0Jess Gallagher and pilot Jacqueline Mengler-Mohr, finishing with a time of\u00a011.042.<\/p>\n

They have not gone quite as fast as the English pair\u00a0Sophie Unwin and her pilot, Anna Whitworth-Hay, who set a time of 10.890, which was then bettered by\u00a0Elizabeth Jordan and Sylvia Misztal, who rode 10.870 with a phenomenal back end.<\/p>\n

New Zealand’s\u00a0Emma Foy and Jessie Hodges qualified fourth.<\/p>\n

Gallagher and Mengler-Mohr will face off against Unwin and Whitworth-Hay in their semifinal.<\/p>\n

Australia returning to track and field on day seven\"Gemma<\/p>\n

Returning to Scotstoun Stadium tonight, we’ve got\u00a0Cameron McEntyre flying the green and gold flag in javelin!<\/p>\n

The\u00a0men will be looking to qualify for the finals, which are scheduled for tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Our\u00a027-year-old Sydney-sider comes to Glasgow with a personal best of\u00a085.73m\u00a0\u2014 McEntyre recorded that PB just this season, so he’s\u00a0in fine form to compete in Glasgow tonight.<\/p>\n

The javelin qualifiers will kick off in about 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

Some of the events need some explaining.<\/p>\n

Today’s first event is the para sprint cycling. This is the event that you might remember as being a head-to-head race between two riders, with a slow start, sometimes with riders coming to a complete stop.<\/p>\n

This is the event that Anna Mears was so dominant in during her career.<\/p>\n

This is qualifying, so there will be no head-to-head stuff yet; instead, athletes will have to put down their fastest flying 200m time trial.<\/p>\n

The fastest four will progress to the semifinals, which follow that head-to-head format.<\/p>\n

This is a para event, so the riders will be on tandem bikes for this race.<\/p>\n

Jessica Gallagher is in action for Australia, with pilot Jacqueline Mengler-Mohr.<\/p>\n

There are six teams in this, with four heading into the semis.<\/p>\n
