A contestant on an ABC show which depicted violence against billionaire Gina Rinehart has apologised, after the broadcaster referred the segment to the Ombudsman following a complaint from the mining magnate.<\/p>\n
Ms Rinehart lodged a complaint over the four-minute clip, part of the ABC\u2019s Race Around The World series, which ended with a voiceover which said: \u201cWhen the revolution comes, will you hide under the bed or will you know exactly how to shove a stick right up Gina Rinehart\u2019s butthole, stirring it round, mixing her guts up nice and smooth, to make one big sausage roll to make something out of nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hancock Prospecting, Ms Rinehart\u2019s company, called on the broadcaster to apologise and remove the segment for depicting violence against the mining magnate.<\/p>\n
An ABC spokesperson said the film was intended to be satirical in tone.<\/p>\n
But on Thursday, contestant Kate McGuinness shared a statement via the ABC saying it was not her intention to promote violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe sense of humour featured in each of my films on the Race Around The World program is farcical,\u201d Ms McGuinness said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn no way was it my intention to promote violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy writing is cartoonish and always satirical. Unfortunately, jokes do not land with everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cIts purpose was never to be taken literally. I apologise to anyone I\u2019ve offended.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ABC initially released a statement defending the segment as \u201ceditorially justifiable\u201d but referred the matter to the Ombudsman after backlash.<\/p>\n
The ABC Ombudsman is an internal office that reports directly to the ABC board.<\/p>\n
Communications Minister Anika Wells on Wednesday said the segment was unacceptable.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy personal view is it\u2019s unacceptable. Like any Australian, there\u2019s stuff I see on TV that I don\u2019t agree with,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the Minister for Communications, I respect the editorial independence of the ABC, but I understand they have now referred it to the Ombudsman. I think that was the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
