World Boxing\u00a0 cleared Russian boxers across all age categories to participate in international tournaments using their national flag and anthem, according<\/a> to Suspilne Sport on July 30.<\/p>\n

The official announcement was shared by Russian Sports Minister and President of the Russian Olympic Committee Mikhail Degtyarev.<\/p>\n

Degtyarev stated, “Russian boxing is returning to the global arena. World Boxing has permitted our athletes across all age categories to participate with the national flag and anthem in all international competitions. The Russian Boxing Federation was admitted as a member of WB in early 2026.” <\/p>\n

In its statement, World Boxing emphasized that Russian athletes will now participate in World Boxing competitions on equal terms with boxers from any other country. However, World Boxing will strictly monitor the behavior of Russian delegations during competitions, as well as adherence to anti-doping protocols. <\/p>\n

World Boxing is the international federation for Olympic boxing. It was established in 2023 following tensions between the International Boxing Association (IBA), headed by Russian Umar Kremlev, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). <\/p>\n

The development follows earlier actions by the International Olympic Committee, which restored membership to the Russian Olympic Committee on July 2026 and advised governing bodies to remove restrictions on Russian athletes taking part in competitions.<\/p>\n

In February 2025, the IOC granted World Boxing provisional recognition, and by March 2025, boxing was officially included in the program for the 2028 Olympic Games. Ukraine applied for membership in the federation in 2024 while initiating its exit from the IBA, officially becoming a member of World Boxing last year.<\/p>\n

The restoration of state symbols for returning athletes generated significant friction across the sports world, as critics underscored that permitting the flag and anthem serves to legitimize state propaganda while Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine persists. <\/p>\n

Pointing to the ongoing destruction of athletic infrastructure and the loss of lives among Ukrainian sports figures, opponents of the decision emphasized that granting full symbolic representation on the global stage undermines international sports integrity and disregards principles established by international governing bodies.<\/p>\n

On July 7, 2026, the International Olympic Committee removed <\/a>its recommended restrictions on the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions, transferring complete regulatory authority back to individual sporting federations. <\/p>\n

This policy shift ended the unified protective measures that previously required neutral status vetting, allowing individual governing bodies to decide whether athletes could compete under their national symbols and flags. Concurrently, the IOC executive board provisionally reinstated the Russian Olympic Committee, lifting the blanket ban on staging international tournaments within Russian territory. <\/p>\n
