{"id":834316,"date":"2026-07-30T22:00:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T22:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/834316\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T22:00:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T22:00:16","slug":"nathan-herne-james-moffat-return-to-trans-am-rivals-ahead-of-bathurst-1000-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/834316\/","title":{"rendered":"Nathan Herne, James Moffat return to Trans Am rivals ahead of Bathurst 1000 alliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THEY have spent the past 48 hours as allies, but Nathan Herne and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-24-James-Moffat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Moffat<\/a> will put that on pause this weekend as they recommence their title rivalry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herne and Moffat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/grm-to-make-shock-bathurst-1000-comeback\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were on Wednesday morning announced<\/a> as drivers for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-354-Garry-Rogers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Garry Rogers<\/a> Motorsport wildcard effort at this year\u2019s Repco Bathurst 1000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both have had plenty of nice words for one another, but at the Perth Super440 it\u2019s back to business in the world of Trans Am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herne is a two-time champion of the category from 2021 and \u201922, with Moffat having seized the crown in \u201923.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast forward to this year and through two rounds they are one and two in the standings, with Herne at a 31-point advantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s an interesting one to balance,\u201d said the 23-year-old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHopefully me and Moff can keep out of each other for Perth, QR and The Bend before we co-drive together and we\u2019re still on talking terms at that point!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/superstore.v8sleuth.com.au\/products\/v8-sleuth-magazine-subscription?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=buy-button&amp;utm_content=buy-button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sleuth-mag-subscription.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know how Moff races and I think we\u2019re very similar in a lot of ways. It will be an exciting time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have, not a gentleman\u2019s agreement, but we don\u2019t fall into the politics and crap that a lot of people do. We don\u2019t protest each other or anything like that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe just race hard, we race fair and move on with life and shake hands at the end of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that level of respect is always going to be there between us and GRM and Moff especially.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think the Trans Am stuff is going to become an issue \u2013 maybe just some internal bragging rights potentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moffat weighed in: \u201cFortunately we\u2019re not racing Trans Am on the same weekend as Bathurst!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTrans Am is a completely separate program and we\u2019re both there to do the best job we can for our individual teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI obviously drive for GRM in Trans Am and Nathan\u2019s running his own team, so I wouldn\u2019t expect anything on-track to change there in terms of how we go about racing each other in the Trans Am car.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MW-Moffat-207A0744-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-260426\"  \/>James Moffat. Pic: Mark Walker<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I\u2019ve had a bit to do with Nathan when he was at GRM, more so when he was in the S5000, and just sort of helping him where I can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we wind it back six years ago\u2026 we did a couple of days at Winton in the ZB, because for all intents and purposes he was doing that Bathurst in 2020. I remember being up there and doing some driver coaching stuff with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s how far back I guess that Nathan and I go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve always followed his career reasonably closely. I think he\u2019s a good talent.
