{"id":835360,"date":"2026-07-31T09:40:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T09:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/835360\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T09:40:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T09:40:09","slug":"teddy-atlas-sums-up-conor-benns-chances-of-beating-ryan-garcia-to-become-world-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/835360\/","title":{"rendered":"Teddy Atlas sums up Conor Benn&#8217;s chances of beating Ryan Garcia to become world champion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Legendary trainer Teddy Atlas has predicted an upset victory when <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/boxer\/ryan-garcia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Garcia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/boxer\/conor-benn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Conor Benn<\/a> go head to head.<\/p>\n<p>The two welterweights will collide at Las Vegas\u2019 T-Mobile Arena on September 12, with \u2018King Ry\u2019 making a first defence of his WBC world title.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia claimed his belt by dethroning Mario Barrios with a unanimous decision victory in February, which followed his unexpected <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/news\/rolando-romero-drops-and-shocks-ryan-garcia-in-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">points defeat to Rolando Romero<\/a> in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, Garcia seemed a shadow of his former self after returning from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/boxing\/articles\/cd1175e56x7o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">year-long doping ban<\/a>, courtesy of him testing positive for ostarine following his encounter with Devin Haney.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of confidence appeared to be the main problem here, with the American\u2019s passive approach throughout the build-up being matched by his lacklustre performance against Romero.<\/p>\n<p>But while Garcia is now coming off a far more assured display against Barrios, Atlas remains unconvinced that the 27-year-old can maintain this mindset.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadacasino.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Canada Casino<\/a>, the Hall of Fame trainer highlighted the champion\u2019s inconsistency as the reason for him siding with Benn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGarcia has always been influenced on a mental and emotional basis. He is very talented, but unless he is right mentally and emotionally, that talent doesn\u2019t really equate into anything special.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGarcia is probably in a better place now, mentally, than he has been for a while. But does he stay in that place? At the end of the day, I usually go towards consistency. Garcia fights in spurts. Benn is not as flashy or spectacular in those spurts, but he is more consistent with his offence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the mental area, Benn probably gets a bit of an edge.
